Ok, let me get right back up on the horse here ;)
When I was looking for information regarding the 'banishment parchment'-thread, I came across a newsgroup in which a certain individual had started what must be the most pedantic topic ever.
This guy pointed out that in the movie Gollum clearly have seven or eight teeth, whereas in the books it is CLEARLY stated that he have only six. It says so in The Hobbit, actually.
Now, I do not know about you, but I could not care less whether the movie "got this right". But I DO think it is a hilarious point to make. Yet I do not blame the guy for bringing it up, though I assume he did not get a warm welcome. But if people cannot just lighten up and laugh at this, then who exactly is taking things way too seriously?
I found it funny. Though I am not laughing at the guy for being ridiculous. Neither at the movie for "failing" to catch this detail. But because it demonstrates to me how appallingly large and dedicated this LOTR community really this; that somewhere in this world there is actually a guy who bothers to see if "they got the teeth right"... now, what are the odds of that? I even find it funny in itself to learn that Gollum in no way have an arbitrary number of teeth - that's detail.
So I hope you can receive this thread as it is intended. I think most threads, though they may seem silly or irrelevant to some, might spark some interest in others. And discussing the inevitable flaws and differences from the book should be perfectly legitimate, as long as it is presented properly. "A chain is never stronger than its weakest link", as you know. So with this in mind, I do not see why some fans feel threatened whenever the topic goes towards "flaws" in the movies.
