can't believe this? Well it's true, just yesterday they passed many laws. I still don't understand if they are sueing people who download music or people who share music files.

I believe they're sueing both but from what I understand, anyone who gets caught will have to sign some jint saying they won't d/l illegally ever again. If they continue, they'll have to pay a fine and whatnot.

They better not find me, because I have loads of downloaded music and at $100,000 per song I don't think I could afford over $10,000,000 in fines

i haven't got into that circle, but i presume that those laws are only in teh US? or have they been implemented as part of the global music market?

don't know, but I'm not sure if they are suing people who share music files, that's what i heard specifically on TV.

As a Canadian, I am exempt from this mess, at least until Canada does something about it. I think they are also only sueing people that share. If you have Kazaa set to download only, not upload, you should be safe.

If they stopped - re-releasing albums with "Special Editions" labeled on them, then people wouldn't be so pissed off - same with DVD's.
Why should I pay £19.99 for a DVD, only to find out 2 months later that the same film (but with better bonuses(i.e. added footage, making of) etc) is released at the same (or less) price?
Isn't that a con too?

They are starting by sueing anyone whos downloaded more than a 1000 songs - its harder to prove howmany you have shared, but once they take your hard drive they can prove which tracks were downloaded apparently.
They are also apparenty allowing people to sign those forms saying they will delete all the mp3s etc before they get sued, but once they sue you its too late.
They also say they are tracking overseas users incase they need to chase them up in the future - who knows how serious they were about that. The americans are the only ones kicking up a real fuss so far.
I have my excuses ready, how does this sound? "I only downoaded ones I had on cassette already" ;)
Also in related news apple just announced they have sold there 1 000 000th legit mp3 for that i-pod thing.

Interesting news there. Especially the 12yr old who got sued and paid the RIAA 2000 bucks.

another solution is to not use kazaa or any of the mainstream downloading programs.
i use one that is considered underground and has been flying under the RIAA radar so far.

Coping a CD from your friend is illegal also. It's just alot harder to prove and find people who do it. On the internet it is eaiser to track who is downloading what.
Baadshah

so it's illegal to share the music, but not download
trevaine

It is illegal to download if you did not purchase the specific music. The bots the RIAA uses on media sharing platforms such as Kazaa and WinMX search user names for specific songs. If you aren't sharing, the automated program can not find you as one that has possesion of that specific song.
You can get in trouble for downloading as well... but if that happens... expect to get hit by lightning as you turn in your winning lottery ticket.
