Hey people!!!
Has anyone out there quit smoking I want to quit tommorow I've had enough of smelling like smoke and feeling like crap but every time i quit smoking it lasts about a week or two then i go out with my friends and I have a beer and i want to smoke a butt... and if i stop drinking then after a few weeks I want a cigaret... Anyone know of anyway other than like the patch to just quit...

Theres some product out there that lets you "step down" from week to week. From what I've heard its a cigarette that each week contains less and less nicotene (sp). By the third or fourth week, those cigarettes have NO nicotene in them and your body no longer craves it. My friend is on it now and so far so good. I'll get the name of the product for you.
I smoke. I would like to quit, I'm just not a quitter.

I've heard good things about Zyban. It's a prescription drug that is supposed to kill your cravings. It's hit and miss though. I've talked to people that have quit after a week on it, and I've talked to people that said it doesn't work at all.

I stopped smoking 2 weeks ago. Cold turkey.
The trick is to get into the right frame of mind.
You WILL get cravings, there's no way to avoid that. Don't try to surpress them, or ignore them, or try to stop getting cravings. Only time will stop them.
Instead of saying "I'm not going to want a cigarette ever again." Give yourself a realistic goal. Mine was "I'm never going to spend another penny on cigarettes again." It's a goal that actually has nothing to do with cigarettes at all. It's about spending the money, the actual transaction between you and the clerk. And I haven't spent a penny on a cigarette ! :)

Congratulations on quitting. Get a support group, or something and someone that can keep you accountable. I wanted to stop, well, doing something I didn't feel very good about, and my friend and I quit, and we held each other accoutable by saying something in a secretive sort of way, which was how we asked each other if we had/hadn't that day, and if either one of us had, we beat the crap out of the other person. People never knew what we were talking about, or why when we said it we'd hurt each other, but after a week or two of that, both of us quit.
"Bob had ***** tits."
When I think of support groups, that line always come to mind...

What if non-smokers did it the opposite way? They would gradually become addicted to nicotine

The most important thing you can do is WANT to give up. Without that you don't really have much chance.
I gave up tobacco in January 2001 after watching my Father die of Emphyzema. He basically drowned in his own fluids with 10% lung capacity.
I din't really ned much more incentive than that :(
I went to my GP and was refered to a local programme that provided a weekly support meeting with a dedicated Nuse. She determined with me which method would be most suitable. I couldn't have Zyban because of a previous head injury (there's a slim possibility of epilepsy apparently if you've suffered a previous head trauma), so I went for the patches.
I cut smoking completely from day one. Yes it was difficult, but as I said, I had the incentive.
It took me 3 months to work down the patch dosage to zero, but I've never looked back and have no cravings.
Perversely enough, through the worst times since then, (a lot of shyte hit the fan after my Dad died), the thing that kept me from going back was the fact that I had the self-esteem from knowing that amidst everything, I did have the strength to give up. And stay given up.
But the only thing that's going to get you through is determination.
Good luck

i can remember some steven king short story about how this guy went to this company to quit smoking. One of the rules is that he cant smoke a cigarette otherwise they'll chop one of his wife's fingers off.
That made him stop smoking.
But at the end of the story he had one cigarette in his car and it tasted like s**t cause he hadnt had a smoke for months. Later that night he found his wife only had 9 fingers.
It was an excellent story.

Longshanks is right. You have to WANT to quit. Ive quit last year after almost 13 years of heavy smoking. I just stopped. No help from no medicine nor other stuff. No easy quitting by smoking less every day. Ive just thrown the package away. Thats it. Its just a bad habbit that kills you and it is your hand that pics up a cigarete, so its you to blame. If you dont want to do it and die, just dont take a cigarette in your hand. I quit last march and I dont feel any need for it.

I only smoke when I drink. I don't really get addicted to things.
I smoke a cigar every now and then, but I'm far from addicted. The last I had was a Montecristo (de Habana, Cuba ) while I was in Costa Rica last month. It was glorious.

I figured out that instead of smoking I could save 50 000 euro till my 50th birthday, than pay someone to stab me to death. It would be the same, but in my case some poor bastard will get the money instead of myself paying for the quarter of some billionairs car he keeps in his garage to collect dust.
