Ringo is actually a REALLY good drummer. Or he was back in the day. But he's such a dork that it just sorta ruins it for him.

I voted Joey Jordinson... for he is the fastest and the best... i saw him do a whole solo, it was so sick. He was strapped in his chair and he was spun backwards, sideway, etc. and he was going so fast. Joey Jordinson is the master of the double bass pedal. But if i have to go with one of theose guys Idaho... ill go with the System Of A Down drummer.

How can anyone go with Lars Ulrich? Just because he plays ina good band doesnt make him a good drummer... he is average at best... he is not fast and is old and isnt good in the least. I know kids at my school that can play the drums better and faster than Lars Ulrich and they havent even graduated High School yet.
IdahoMR2man

You can go with whoever you want dude, I just showed the people with more than 3 votes. Because nobody is going to touch any of them in the next 24 hours.
And just because someone's fast doesn't mean they are good. I'm about the fastest drummer I know, but doesn't mean I'm good.

Listen to One.
The guy is rattling off snare rolls for a good 4 minutes or so. That takes endurance.

GREAT CALL!!! And I'd like to point out that's not a double bass-drum he's playing in that video. It just sounds like one.;)
The only reason why I didn't vote for him because the vote was for best "Rock" drummer.
If you want to include "Jazz" drummer in that, with the exception of Pert and Copeland, there's not a rock drummer out that there that can compete with a Jazz drummer.

Vinnie Colaiuta.
Anyway for me:
Ian Paice - Deep Purple/Whitesnake
Cozy Powell - Jeff Beck Group/Rainbow/Whitesnake/Michael Schenker Group/Black Sabbath/Emerson, Lake & Powell etc
Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater/Transatlantic etc...
Dennis Chambers - Niacin/Steely Dan/Santana etc....
Phil Collins - Genesis
Bill Bruford - Yes/King Crimson
Alan White - Yes
Carl Palmer - ELP/Asia
Terry Bozzio - Steve Vai/Bozzio Levin & Stevens etc....
Neil Peart - Rush
Stewart Copeland - The Police
Ginger Baker - Cream/Blind Faith
Keith Moon - The Who/The Yardbirds
Nick D'Virgilio - Spock's Beard
Virgil Donati - Planet X
Mike Mangini - Extreme/James LaBrie's Mullmuzzler
Simon Phillips - Toto (at one time)
Lee Kerslake - Uriah Heep/Ozzy Osbourne
And yes Buddy Rich was a prodigy. I can see where Ian Paice drew most of his inspiration from.

Steve from Indy

Phil Ehart - Kansas. Some of their songs have some incredibly difficult beats.
Neil Peart - Rush
John Bohnam - Led Zeppelin. Very powerful drummer
Ronnie Tutt - Elvis Presley drummer.
Not a complete list by any means. There's lots of good drummers of course. These are just guys that made an impression on me
Can I include Buddy Rich also? I always tried to stay up and watch him during one of his Tonight Show appearences back in my younger days. Amazing.

Btw, not that it's important, and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the correct term for a drummer actually "drummist"?

And how the hell did I forget Phil Ehart. He has some pretty impressive chops of his own that's for sure.

Levon Helm of 'The Band' is pretty amazing... If you watch him in The Festival Express and The Last Waltz its a great sight... Plus he does lead vocals in a number of songs so that adds to the talent...
Ginger Baker from Cream is also kick ass... Can't forget about him...
Bonham's been mentioned a ton... Same with Keith Moon...
John Densmore - The Doors
That's all that comes to mind at the moment...

Asia makes me:(
They would have been a good band if they formed in the 70's
The first lineup of Wetton/Howe/Palmer/Downes was really good. After that it just got too soppy. Still I find them listenable at times.
As for Buddy Rich. The guy was a pioneer for crying out loud. Many drummers were influenced by this guy.
Speaking of Buddy Rich here is another fantastic solo I just picked up.

How could i forget Yes's Bill Bruford, Deep Purple's Ian Paice, and Genesis Phil Collins (mostly his early to mid 70s output). Also i happen to believe that jazz drummers make the best rock drummers. They tend to be more daring with good timing and hooks, and treat their instruments as an creative instrument to enhance the song and make their own statement rather than just a timing machine (like most of todays groups).

Wow, I can't believe I haven't posted here yet. My picks:

Dave Abruzze (Pearl Jam's 1st drummer)
Jimmy Chamberlain (Smashing Pumpkins)
Greg Eklund (Everclear)
Dave Grohl (Nirvana,early Foo Fighters)
Stan Lynch (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers up to 94)
Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews)
Larry Mullen (U2)
Brad Wilk (RATM,Audioslave)
Chad Gracey (Live)
Jon Farriss (INXS)
Matt Cameron (Soundgarden, currently for Pearl Jam)
Chad Smith (RHCP)
