View Full Version : Reforging of Narsil? (spoiler?)
Ok, I admit I am a newbie (first post, hi all), but I could not find anyone else bringing this up. And I DID perform a search, so bear with me ;)
The picture below is the reforging of Narsil, is it not? At first I thought it was just someone waving a sword in the Paths of the Dead, since it seems a bit sinister in there. But the hammer and anvil, and the water dripping from the sword leads me to believe it has just been cooled after the forging.
What do you think?
Who is doing it, and where?

This scene is very likely in Rivendell and yes this is the reforging of Narsil (Anduril) and it appears to be an Elven swordsmith wielding it if not Elrond himself.
We'll know on December 16th!
Welcome Aboard, jeti!

I dont know why, but for AGES I gat the impression that Aragorn took Anduril with him when he left Imladris (valour knows why, its not like I didnt know it was brought to him by his brothers later on!!)
I agree with Samwise though, the back ground is very elven, and theres no where like that in the realms of men which is where all of ROTK is set. There is a hammer and anvil there too, so it muct be an elven smith, or even Elrond (since it looks like wither he or Arwen will take it to Aragorn)
Cant wait to see Aragorn weilding it on the big screen though :)

That would be because in the book of course he does take it re-forged after leaving Rivendell in FOTR.
The thing I noticed in some behind the scenes footage in the POTD in the 12 min ROTK preview, was that it does seem like a particularly long sword. Definitely bigger than his Ranger sword.

Yeah. I never did get what the fuss was all about with Anduril because Aragorn has had it for about 2 months by the time ROTK comes out! But as adt says, that's only in the books. :)

It's a great picture though, but it seems to me that the person holding Anduril is Aragorn. But that's just me...

I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was Arwen who brings Aragorn Anduril in the movie.....that's how she gets to Minas Tirith, and then to Mordor for the finale.

I cant believe Im actually saying this, but more and more lately Im getting what happened in the books mixed up with thats going on in the movies!! A few months ago I swore blind that Aragorn took Andurin with him from Imladris, then for some reason I changed my mind. AGH!! You know, I think I am going mad after all :(

No, I think we're pretty sure that Elrond now takes the sword to Aragorn at the Rohan encampment/Dunharrow, whereas Arwen stays in Rivendell or Lothlorien.

me too :(
So Arwen will be riding to Gondor alone and not with her Adar? With all these picky changes they might as well just left the twins in.

I don't know, but I have a feeling Arwen won't be riding down to Gondor and Minas Tirith until the battles are all over, with a company of Elves for the nuptuals.

yeah, but i think that there will be some elves there. just a suspicion that i have. the elves had a decent part in FOTR, and in TTT, and PJ likes the elves, i think, so i suspect that they will have a decent sized part of ROTK too

From what I hear, the last battle in Mordor (the diversion), will be an all out war between humans/elves vs. Orgs/Trolls/and whatever. Again, just to gove the movie more of a climax then the book. And you can bet your @$$ Arwen will be there.
After all, she was supposed to be in Helm's Deep..
Fanible

Well hopefully she'll be there. Liv has said that she doesn't show up much, but she is in there.
Im hoping that kind of participation is in hand. And the more vastness the better anyhow. It's got to beat the power of Helm's Deep (among other scenes) when it hit audiences last year.

i think that it will be an all species battle. that is what i have suspected and wanted for a while.

More dwarves would certainly be interesting to see gettin all up and in there. I havn't heard much on that though.

There may be Elves at the Morannon, but certainly Arwen won't be fighting, you can bet your bottom dollar on that!
She was only at first to take on the 'Xena-Arwen' role at Helm's Deep in very early drafts of the script, when Miramax where planning to make the story in just 2 films. Hence a great amount of merging/cutting of the story had to be done.
As for Dwarves, they definitely won't be there, besides Gimli of course.
Well, I guess the eagles will have to do, then. Looking forward to that.

Im sure Gimli will make up for the lack of dwarves in ROTK :) Hes a big enough chacter to handle it ^_^

Ummm....well, there were spy pics of Arwen at Helm's Deep when they were filming it. It was after that she was cut from it.
And I'll match your dollar, saying that she will be there!

They cut Arwens role as the warrior princess after they decided to focus more on Eowyn's character.
(Its bad enough they gave her Glorfindel's role! I dont think she will be doing any fighting)

Yes, I know they filmed Arwen initially during principle shooting.
My information that this aspect of her role was left over from the original treatments done for the 2-film plan. Either way it was, rightly, decided against and cut. I don't know if even in this version she was ever planned to be at the BOTPF, if she was it can only have been in place of Dernhelm IMO.
Either way, Arwen won't be fighting on the fields of Pelennor.

That's what I thought too...but the thing that confuses me is the "gift" Arwen sent him via Halbarad during "The Passing of the Grey Company." As I was re-reading it, for some reason I thought it was a sword (probably because I read on these boards Arwen brings him Narsil in the film). What then was it that she sent him? It was described as some kind of staff and Aragorn says "Now I know what you bear." I don't believe it was ever mentioned again(if it was I didn't notice it). So will whatever it was be included in the film as well, or is Narsil kinda in place of it?

BTW, if you freeze frame the DVD and forward it frame by frame during Theoden's 'Forth Eorlingas' charge, you can actually make out Arwen in a few frames, but in far more than that, her horse!
There are only 2 white horses in the charge - Legolas' and Arwen's, but in a couple of larger shots they appear to have actually digitally covered Arwen's body and replaced it by a male soldier.

It was his banner! The White Tree and 7 stars that she had been making while in Rivendell (obviously needlecraft is more to her ability than sword fighting ;) ).
Hopefully we will see it unfurl majestically front the mast of the Corsair's ship commandeered by Aragorn, as it sails up the Anduin toward the Pelennor. :)

I know these pictures are really old, but placing Arwen in helms Deep would have been a big mistake.
This might also be a really stupid question, but when Arwen is shown leaving in TTT (watched by Elrond) where is she going?

I dont think its a stupid question Evenstar, I figured they wanted the audience (who didnt know the story) to think Arwen left, leaving Aragorn to fall for Eowyn or something (I mean WHAT was with that kiss?!?!?!?!)
Maybe she gets to the harbour (hell, even just outside of Imladris) changes her mind and back tracks back to her father and Aragorn.

That makes more sense than my idea at least. I wondered if it was material shot of Arwen leaving for Helms Deep that they still used but for another means.

HUGE mistake IMO!
It's presumed she's going to the Grey Havens with the rest of the Elves I presume. We never really see her leave Rivendell as such though.
In ROTK she'll be most of the time in either Rivendell or Lothlorien.

Thanks, I had a feeling it could be something like that (judging by it's description). And I knew it wasn't a sword since he already had it in the books. That's why I said "What then was it" because it couldn't have been Narsil.
For adt or anyone else: Do you think they will fit that in during the movie even though Elrond is bringing Aragorn the sword in a similar type of scene ("We have been working on this for you" kind of thing)? And if they do, would they have Arwen bring it herself? (allowing her to appear much earlier)

I originally thought Elladin and Elrohir would bring the banner and sword to Aragon. Being that Elrond looks to be bringing the sword now, I presume he will bring the banner too, at least I hope so. I can't see there being a separate scene as such for this, because we all know how concise PJ likes to keep things. There's no point wasting time on extra scenes when the 2 things can be done together.
