This thread is obviously about the Red Sox.You may cheer or jeer them in this thread, but one thing I wil be doing is to do every1 a favor and tell the Red Sox summary for the day.:)Hopefully it'll bring a bit more life to this forum.
So far today, with the Yanks and a's losing, the Sox gain gorund on both races should they hold on to this 5-3 lead.Ben Affleck threw out 1st pitch and commentated today a bit. Also, the Sox raised over 1 million for the Jimmy Fund:D.Even George Steinbrenner donated 10 grand and Bud Selig did 20 grand!1 million is great and hopefully they'll contintue to do great.

Well, actually there is only one world series, and it was 1986:(But whut team is co-leader of wildcard and whut team is 9 games back agian?Whut team had Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, Roger Clemens (for the best years of is career) , Smokey Joe Wood, Cy Young, Dick Radatz, Jim Rice, Tony Conigliaro, Dwight Evans, the Rem-Dog;), and Mo Vaughn in is prime, among many others????Even in the present, which team had Manny Rmairez, Nomah Garciaparra, and Pedro Martinez?Which team has like 11 all-star s the last tow years combined????No, no the the Blue Jays, not even the great Detroit Tigers , but the BOSTON RED SOX!!!!!!!!!1

And what team has sucked major @$$ since the 1920's??? The BOSTON RED SOX :p
Actually two of Clemens best years were in T.O. after the usual start up woes the jays have consistently feilded a team full of superstars and great young talent. Even this year they kept up with the Sox and the Yankees for the first half of the season despite having only a fraction of the payroll available to them. Problem with the jays is that their management has much to be desired.. always has been. Give Boston another couple years near the top spot (during which they will most likely not win another series) and they'll either be spending twice what they are now to try and field a decent team or they'll be floundering. While the Jays will remain consistent and prosper only getting better.

Tyross u shouldnt be making fun of the Boston Red Sox... cuz if u think about it, once the Blue Jays started to suck, all the fans just ddint go to the games... there not REAL fans... Boston fans go to the games whether the team is in 1st place or in last place... The Blue Jays have sucked more years than the Red Sox have.

The $1 day was for a worthy cause and I don't really see how you can degredate it with all Toronto has suffered the past year we need the boost right now from things like that and the Stones concert. But crowds and ticket prices have nothing to do with how good the team is.

Nobody goes and sees them play... most of them in Canada r bad fans... if u pple love the blue jays so much then y dont u go and see them play? They had the 1$ ticket price day because they didnt have anyone going to there games... so they said screw it and got a big crowd. The blue jays r not even close to the red sox or the yankees so the blue jays have slim to none hope this year. they have a young ball club and i think they will b very good in a couple years.

After a weekend spent battling a throat ailment, only to have his heart and integrity questioned by Boston sports radio personalities, Pedro Martinez lashed back Sunday, implying to one talk show host that he would not stay in Boston beyond next season when his current contract expires.
"I will make $17.5 [million -- the amount he is due next season] and then I am out of here," Martinez told WBZ Radio veteran Jon Miller. Martinez's quotes were published in the Boston Globe on Monday.
In April, the Red Sox exercised a $17.5 million option on Martinez for the 2004 season, after which he currently is eligible for free agency. Red Sox spokesman Kevin Shea told the Globe that Martinez denied making the statement to Miller.
Martinez was diagnosed Thursday with pharyngitis, a severe throat inflammation, that caused him to miss his scheduled start that night. He spent nearly six hours at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, where he ran a fever of 101 and was treated intravenously for dehydration, according to the Globe. Accordingly, Martinez bristled at suggestions, generally voiced by sports radio callers or commentators, that he might not have been sick.
Upon hearing about people's doubts, Red Sox owner John Henry came to Martinez's defense.
"If that's what people are saying, I'd be irate, too," Henry told the Globe. "It makes me angry. If that's what they're saying, it's preposterous. It's ridiculous because he gives his all. He puts his heart and soul into every start, and to accuse him of potentially missing a big start by faking an illness, that's heinous."
Henry told the Globe that he did not see Martinez's integrity questioned by any newspaper.
"It must be talk radio," Henry said. "It happens in every market. It's not just Boston. Talk radio in every market, if you ask players around the league, they will say it's full of complaining and whining. It's everywhere."
Henry also told the Globe that he was baffled anyone would suggest Martinez would concoct a phony illness to skip a start. Martinez is scheduled to start Monday's four-game series finale against Seattle.
"I can't imagine people would think that," he said. "When he has a big start, there's no bigger gamer on this staff than Pedro. You would think every fan in New England knows how badly Pedro wants to win. He doesn't want to come out of a ballgame. We're all aware of that.
"I'm not calling Pedro's reaction an overreaction because if somebody takes issue with Pedro's heart, if I were Pedro, I would be very angry about that."
Henry also said that he planned to open contract discussions after the season aimed at keeping both Martinez and star shortstop Nomar Garciaparra in Boston beyond next season.

WAAAAA!!!!!I am making 17.5 million for 1 year and God knows how much this year and the past few years, and I am leaving cuz they made fun of me:(:(This guy has to realize some people would shoot there own leg off for a quarter of what he makes in a year, he should say something positive about the fans so they like him more, and pitch his head off to get the job done for us!!!I admit, the blame SHOULD be going to Grady Little for so tenderly treating Pedro these last 2 years, and I DO believe Pedro wouldn't miss a start, but I also think he is kinda taking these millions for granted. He should make Little let him stay until he gets reall tired out there. As much as you have to treat him with care, he isn't a china doll, eh is a majot-leaguer, unfortuately not one like the greats who pitched 20 innings in one game every now and then (no exaggeration) and never got taken out of the game.....

BOSTON (AP) -- BOSTON (AP) -- Pedro Martinez got all the support he needed from David Ortiz -- a home run, four RBIs and a big hug after he came off the mound.
"That guy, right now, he deserves the best," Ortiz said after the Red Sox ace beat the Seattle Mariners 8-1 on Monday in his first start after being incapacitated by a severe sore throat and fever.
"He's not even close to being 100 percent. He's sick for real and he still comes out and gives us his best," Ortiz said. "I hope the people here in Boston appreciate what he's done for the ballclub. We get to be around one of the greatest in the game."
Returning from a throat infection that knocked him out of his last start, Martinez (10-3) allowed one run on six hits and two walks, striking out four. The sellout matinee crowd, sensing that he was done after the sixth inning, gave him a big hand as he left the mound, and the 6-4, 230-pound Ortiz gave him a bear hug on the dugout steps.
Martinez did not comment after the game, as has been his custom this season.
"He gave us everything he had out there tonight and we were proud for him," Boston manager Grady Little said.
It was Martinez's 12th consecutive victory over Seattle -- the longest such streak in the majors -- though his lifetime ERA against them went up from 0.96 to 1.00. Bronson Arroyo pitched three scoreless innings in his AL debut for the save.
Gil Meche (13-10) allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings for his third consecutive loss.
Boston has won five in a row overall since falling a season-high 7 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees in the AL East. The Red Sox, who improved to a season-high 21 games above .500, took a half-game lead over Oakland in the AL wild-card race.
Seattle has lost six in a row and its lead over the Athletics was trimmed to a half-game before Oakland played at Toronto on Monday night.
"Chalk it up to a bad trip," second baseman Bret Boone said. "Go home. Get fresh."
The Mariners held a team meeting after the game to try to turn things around.
"We just have to realize where we've come from," manager Bob Melvin said. "We've got another run in us."
Ortiz homered for the fourth time in five games and hit a two-run single as the Red Sox scored four in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Nomar Garciaparra went 3-for-4 for the second consecutive day and scored his 101st run of the season; he has topped 100 in each of his six full seasons.
Johnny Damon walked to lead off the third, took second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout. Garciaparra singled to make it 1-0 and, after Manny Ramirez struck out, Ortiz homered to right.
In the fifth, Todd Walker singled, Garciaparra singled and Ramirez walked before Ortiz singled in two runs. Two outs later, Kevin Millar doubled off reliever Kazuhiro Sasaki to score two more runs and make it 7-0.
Martinez's start capped a crazy week that started when the Red Sox ace skipped the team photo last Wednesday -- the fourth time in the past six years he has done so. That became a bigger issue when he woke up with a severe sore throat and a fever on Thursday.
Martinez was examined at the hospital and scratched from his scheduled start, not to return to the ballpark until Saturday. Although no one -- except perhaps a few fire-breathing talk radio callers -- doubted the severity of his illness, Martinez reportedly grew angry that his integrity had been questioned.
Later, through a team spokesman, the pitcher denied the comments attributed to him by a radio reporter.

Just got back from vacation... All 6 days I was gone, the M's get their asses handed to them. I come back, and we win... I will not leave again until after the world series... I'm happy for Boston, and happy for Oakland (especially happy now that Mulder's GONE!) because now it's a 3-team race... SEA plays sub-500 teams for the next 22 games, and we took care of Tampa tonight... Hopefully we can get back on track... Our bats come and go, so we rely mostly on pitching and defense, and for those last 6 games, our starters were awful... I'm going with Silpknot and saying put Soriano in the rotation NOW for the stretch run...
Whatever happens, hold on tight...
Finally, on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, who saw that pole on which team of the 4 (NYY, OAK, SEA, BOS) was most likely NOT to make the playoffs... Who lost (or won, whatever way you wanna look at it)?

I agree with Slipknot, Pad's have a chance at wildcard contention next year.Jake Peavy, Perez, Hoffman when he returns, a Sean Burroughs who should reach his potential, Ryan Klesko (who is havin an off year), a healthy Phil Nevin, and of course Brain Giles. This is of course assuming the off-chance that they hold on to ALL of these guys.Even if not, they can pull out some moves in the Hot Stove season.I'd imagin those 2 Royal pitchers they got for White must be worth something.

BOSTON -- Talk about nine innings of unpredictability and chaos. The Red Sox and Blue Jays provided nine innings of zaniness Tuesday night at Fenway Park, showcasing big hits, baserunning gaffes, defensive miscues, defensive gems and even an inside-the-park home run from the slow-footed Kevin Millar.
Yes, this game had the good, the bad and certainly the ugly.
But in the end, the sheer drama of it all wasn't enough to soothe the Red Sox, and they fell, 12-9, to the Jays in the opener of a two-game series.
This disheartening defeat snapped Boston's five-game winning streak and robbed the Sox of an opportunity to close the deficit in the AL East to four games.
"It was a tough way to lose after we battled back the way we did," said Sox manager Grady Little. "It was admirable the way we kept coming back and were able to tie the game. It was a shame it got away from us there in the top of the eighth inning."
Indeed, that top of the eighth, when the Jays scored five runs to snap a 7-7 tie, turned out to be the blow the Sox ultimately couldn't recover from.
The Jays have been pests to the Sox all year, as the teams have evenly split their first 18 games heading into Wednesday's finale.
Down four runs to start the bottom of the ninth, Millar led off with a drive to the triangle area in right-center that hit a railing and just kept on rolling. That allowed Millar to do the 360 around the bases, as he scored standing up. The second inside-the-parker of Millar's career was struck off Jays reliever Aquilino Lopez.
"I just caught my breath," Millar quipped to reporters roughly a half-hour after the game. "Inside-the-parkers are weird because something has to happen. It hit the rail and went like 100 yards to the left-field corner."
Millar's first inside-the-parker was also his first Major League homer, as Sammy Sosa lost that one in the ivy at Wrigley Field in 1999.
Unfortunately for the Sox, Millar's unlikely tour de force around the bases was the end of Boston's damage in the ninth.
The Sox also had a big chance to tie it up in the bottom of the eighth off Lopez. Down by four, Manny Ramirez stepped up with the bases loaded and two outs and worked the count to 2-2. However, he struck out on a 2-2 slider.
"Manny's up there with the bases loaded against Lopez, but he has one of the best sliders in the league," Millar said. "I was visualizing Manny getting a grand slam and tying it up at 12-12, but I'll take that situation with Manny up any time."
What the Sox don't choose to take at any time is trailing 7-1 before they bat in the home half of the fourth, but that's what happened in this one.
Still, by the time the fifth started, it was a one-run game.
"We did a heck of a job of just coming back in that game, period," said Sox catcher Jason Varitek. "We were out of that game before we were in it."
The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the second on a bizarre play. With Eric Hinske on first, Reed Johnson slapped a single to right. Gabe Kapler got a slow break on the liner, and Hinske kept on running. He was ruled out at the plate, but the out was overturned when first-base umpire Eric Cooper called interference on shortstop Nomar Garciaparra.
Replays showed that Garciaparra, standing in the basepath, jumped out of the way just as Hinske was about to run by him. But Cooper decided that the split second Garciaparra might have been in Hinske's path might have prevented him from scoring.
"I'm still not satisfied with that call," said Little. "I think there's a possibility we saw a little creative umpiring there. I'm not sure, I've got to look at it on the replay to get the clear picture of it. I don't see how that call can be made from the first-base line."
The Sox struck back in the bottom of the second, as David McCarty -- making a rare start -- doubled to left-center, bringing home Millar.
That didn't derail the Jays any. Frank Catalanotto hit a two-run homer to right off Tim Wakefield in the third, putting the Jays up, 3-1.
This was one of the rare nights this season that Wakefield clearly didn't have his good stuff. Josh Phelps led off the fourth with a double and scored on Hinske's ground-rule double to right.
With one out, Orlando Hudson smacked an RBI double that grazed the Green Monster as a leaping McCarty just missed it. The hits kept coming, as Mike Bordick (RBI single) and Catalanotto (RBI double) pushed the lead to 7-1.
The night was over for Wakefield (3 1/3 innings, nine hits, five earned runs) and Todd Jones came in for the Sox. Jones didn't last long. Vernon Wells blasted a liner back toward the box, and it pelted Jones on his forearm. The infield hit forced Jones (right forearm contusion, day-to-day) out of the game.
Again, the Sox came storming back. Mirabelli got things rolling in the fourth by stinging an RBI single up the middle off Jays starter Mark Hendrickson. McCarty followed with a towering three-run homer over the Monster and suddenly the Sox had trimmed the deficit to 7-5.
"McCarty really gamed up," said Kapler. "He had a great at-bat right there. He got us right back in the thick of things."
It was McCarty's first homer since July 2, 2002, and the four RBIs for the game equaled his career high. The Sox kept the rally going, and Mueller brought the Sox within one by ripping an RBI single to left.
After a long battle back, the Sox finally tied it up in the bottom of the seventh off Blue Jays righty Josh Towers. Walker stung a leadoff double to right that just missed being a homer. In fact, Walker thought it was a homer, and was nearly thrown at second. Blue Jays manager Carlos Tosca thought Walker was out, and got ejected after a vehement argument.
With two outs, Millar roped an RBI double down the line in left, making it 7-7.
Befitting the way this game went, the Jays climbed right back on top in the eighth. After retiring the leadoff man, lefty Scott Sauerbeck issued a walk to Bordick and a single to Catalanotto, setting up runners at the corners with one out. Sauerbeck's quick night of work was over.
On came Scott Williamson, who was greeted by a go-ahead, RBI double by Wells. Pinch-hitter Tom Wilson provided insurance with a fielder's choice grounder to third. An RBI single by Phelps and a double to left by Hinske put the Jays up 12-7.
"It wasn't the prettiest game, I'll be honest with you," Kapler said. "I'd like to go back and start it all over. I'm not going to sleep good tonight, even though some really positive things came out of that game."

BOSTON -- The home run heroes struck again at Fenway Park Wednesday night, this time taking their wrath out on one of the top Cy Young Award contenders in the American League.
After losing a tough 12-9 decision to the Jays Tuesday night, some teams might have been daunted by the prospect of facing Roy Halladay in the next game. Not the Sox. Not in this season of home run heroics.
Unfazed by an early 3-0 deficit, the Sox rallied back for a 6-3 victory that was enabled by -- what else? -- the longball.
Jason Varitek (game-trying three-run shot), Todd Walker (go-ahead two-run blast) and David Ortiz (insurance solo blow) accounted for the entire offensive output against Halladay.
The Sox have swatted 196 home runs this season, placing them 17 shy of the franchise record set by the 1977 squad. The way the wealth of those home runs has been almost evenly distributed has been almost mind-boggling.
Consider that when Walker struck his shot off Halladay -- his 10th of the season -- it made him the ninth Red Sox hitter to reach double digits this season. That established a franchise record.
"It's pretty incredible what we've got going here," Walker said. "It's pretty special what's happening right now and we've got a whole month left so who knows what can happen. Any given night, anybody can do anything in this lineup and you're going to win more games that way."
No fewer than six Red Sox sluggers (Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Ramirez, Kevin Millar, Ortiz, Varitek, Trot Nixon) have hit 20 homers this season, the first time in team history that has happened.
"Anybody can leave the park, one through nine," Millar said. "And you have balance, a couple switch hitters. We have big at-bats and not too many superstars other than Nomar and Manny. The rest of the guys just plug away and grind it out."
Early on, it looked like a long shot that Boston blasts would be the theme of a game which saw the Sox pull within four games of the Yankees in the AL East.
After all, the Blue Jays didn't waste any time moving in front. Carlos Delgado hit a two-run homer to dead center field off John Burkett, and three batters in, the Jays were up 2-0.
With Halladay (17-6) his normally stellar self through the first four innings, the Sox weren't having much luck trying to shrink the deficit.
In fact, the Jays extended it in the fourth. Eric Hinske smacked an RBI double to left to make it 3-0.
Halladay had a three-hit shutout through four, which meant there was no warning for what was to happen in the Boston fifth.
Millar (leadoff walk) and Bill Mueller (one-out single) were the rally-starters, setting up first and second for Varitek. With one swing, Boston's All-Star catcher tied it up, hammering a first-pitch fastball into the bleachers in center field.
"I just tried to stay aggressive," Varitek said. "His first-pitch strikes aren't just first-pitch strikes down the middle. He cuts it and sinks it so you have to totally commit to one side or another and he happened to throw it on the side I was looking."
The shot sent a jolt through the Boston dugout.
"The biggest hit of the game was Varitek hitting the three-run homer," Walker said. "We got behind, and after having lost last night, it's a little tough. But we stayed within ourselves and Tek hit the big three-run homer and got us back in the game and made us believe that we could get to Halladay."
The only reason the Sox were able to eventually get to Halladay is because Burkett kept his team in position to do so.
Making the start on three days rest, he gave the Sox a gutty effort. Burkett went six innings and scattered seven hits and three runs before handing it over to the bullpen. Mike Timlin pitched a scoreless seventh, and then came the drama in the bottom of the inning.
It started innocently enough. With two outs and the bases empty, Johnny Damon smacked an opposite-field single to left.
With Walker at the plate, Damon stole second. Then came an 0-2 pitch, which Walker slammed over the Boston bullpen in right-center for a two-run homer that snapped the tie.
"On 0-2, I didn't know what he was going to throw," said Walker, "but I looked inner third and got a pitch down in there."
It was fitting that it was Walker who put the Sox ahead for good. After Tuesday night's game, he symbolized the type of confidence his team had, even going against someone as good as Halladay.
"We've faced Halladay like 25 times this year, we have a pretty good idea of what he's going to do to us," Walker had said. "The more times you face a guy, the more it becomes a hitter's advantage. We know what he's got, we've faced him enough. We ought to be doing OK."
In fact, it was the sixth time the Sox faced the tough Toronto right-hander this season, and Halladay finished 2-1 in those starts, but the teams split the six games.
The Jays had a man on first and two outs in the eighth, and Sox manager Grady Little went to closer Byung-Hyun Kim for a four-out save.
The move was not met with approval from the crowd, as Kim – who struggled last week – was greeted by the boo birds.
By the time the night was over, the latest packed house at Fenway was applauding Kim, who finished it off for his 11th save.
Though Timlin and Alan Embree were both sound in front of Kim, the true setup crew on this night was the offense. It was the Boston bats that seized control of the night.
"It's different people," Varitek said. "(The opposing pitcher) has to concentrate one through nine and that's big. Sometimes if they blow their concentration on any one of the nine, that's the one that hurts you that day."
Varitek was just one of the men who inflicted pain on Halladay in an inspiring win for the Sox.
"We have stepped up," Little said. "There is a lot of baseball and a lot of things can happen."

BOSTON -- A fan favorite is headed back to Fenway Park just in time to help the Red Sox in their playoff stretch drive.
The Red Sox acquired veteran infielder and Framingham, Mass., native Lou Merloni from San Diego on Thursday in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Rene Miniel. Merloni is expected in uniform and available Friday as Boston opens a crucial three-game weekend series with the Yankees at Fenway.
The 32-year-old Merloni is coming home to the city where he played his first five Major League seasons and where he was originally selected as a 10th-round pick of the 1993 draft. Merloni's first stint in Boston ended when he was claimed off waivers by San Diego just prior to this season on March 25.
"I'm excited," said Merloni before boarding a plane Thursday evening for Boston. "I'm very familiar with the guys there [in Boston]. I was pretty psyched today when I heard about the trade."
After a week of talks between Red Sox general manger Theo Epstein and San Diego GM Kevin Towers, Epstein said the trade came into focus in the final 48 hours.
"We wanted to add some [infield] depth and have the flexibility to give [Bill] Mueller a day off here and there in the final month," said Epstein. "We needed to acquire someone like Lou before August 31 to make him eligible [for the playoffs]."
Merloni returns to Boston, where he was not only adored by many in the stands as a local hero but also respected and liked by many in the clubhouse, including close friend Nomar Garciaparra.
"I talked to Nomar and [Doug] Mirabelli real quick," Merloni said of his Thursday conversation with his new teammates. "They didn't believe me at first."
"When Lou left for San Diego, we told him he would always be a Red Sox and that we would keep doors open for a return to the organization in the future, whether as a player or in another capacity," said Epstein. "We're glad that return date is today. It's an added bonus that he has been in the pressure-cooker of a pennant race and we hope that helps again."
While the Red Sox now have another right-handed bat, the trade also allows Merloni to gain 24 wins in the standings, leaving a rebuilding San Diego team with 53 victories for a Boston team that stands 77-56.
"It's nice to be back in a pennant race," added Merloni. "[This is] a little role reversal from a team that is close to losing 100 games. With the Yankees coming in [Friday], you're thrown right into the fire."
In 65 games with the Padres this season, Merloni hit .272 (41-for-151) with one homer and 17 RBIs. As was the case in his first tour with Boston, he was one of San Diego's most versatile players, spending time at all four infield positions while also playing some left field.
Merloni said Thursday that he is healed from a sprained MCL in his right knee, suffered in a midseason collision with left fielder Rondell White.
Merloni, a member of the last Red Sox playoff team (1999), hit .271 with 46 doubles, nine homers and 77 RBIs in parts of five seasons with the Red Sox from 1998-2002. He also batted .309 (38-for-123) against left-handers over his last three seasons in Boston.
Miniel, 24, split time this season between Single-A Sarasota and Double-A Portland. He went 3-4 with a 3.34 ERA in 19 games (seven starts) for Sarasota to earn a promotion to Portland, where he was 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 15 relief appearances.
To make room for Merloni on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox transferred right-hander Robert Person from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. Epstein said a corresponding move on the 25-man roster would be announced Friday prior to the opener with the Yankees.

Sad. I haven't been to a Mariner's game all year. I finally decided to go to the 2nd to the last game of the season vrs. Oakland (hope there's still a tight race then... I love seeing live games that mean something. I got to see win #116 in 2001...) But what sucks is, there were only scattered singles available, so I have to go alone... I always love to have friends or someone smart I can talk baseball too... Oh well. Now without any family, I'll just be wild and crazy and not care what anyone thinks. Even if we lose 13-1, I'll still be going wild and crazy. I can get a whole section to myself, lol... In the security office :)
Speaking of M's, 1 and 1/2 game wild card lead now. As I said before, "Damn Yankees and their friggin' idiot owner..."

PHILADELPHIA -- If the 61,068 fans who came to Veterans Stadium on Monday were looking for a bunch of runs, numerous lead changes and some late-inning drama, they were satisfied. But if they came in search of a victory for the home team, they left disappointed.
Boston atoned for a number of missed opportunities with a six-run ninth inning in a 13-9 win over the Phillies in front of The largest crowd at The Vet this season.
The win moved the Red Sox one game behind the idle Mariners in the American League Wild Card race and 4 1/2 games behind the Yankees. New York lost, 8-1, to the Blue Jays on Monday.
After falling behind 4-0 after two innings, then taking the lead in the top of the fourth just to lose it in the latter half of the inning, Boston took a 7-6 lead with two runs in the top of the eighth. After squandering it by giving up three runs in the bottom of the inning, Boston came back for good in the ninth.
The Red Sox squared off against Phillies closer Jose Mesa to start the ninth.
After a single surrounded by two walks loaded the bases, Lou Merloni -- inserted as a pinch-runner the inning before -- nubbed a grounder that Philadelphia third baseman Tomas Perez had no play on. Doug Mirabelli scored from third and Merloni was on at first.
Kevin Millar followed with a walk that tied the score at 9, ended the day for Mesa (5-7) and set the stage for Trot Nixon.
Nixon crushed a Turk Wendell offering off the facade in right field for a grand slam. The 379-foot shot down the line was his 25th home run, his second slam of the season and the seventh of his career.
"It was a slider out over the plate and I was able to put the bat on the ball," Nixon said modestly of the game-winning dinger.
Nixon and manager Grady Little praised the work that made the grand slam possible. And the contributions to the big inning came from just about everybody on the roster.
Mirabelli, who came in the game as part of a double-switch in the eighth, led off the ninth with a walk. After a lineout by Johnny Damon, Damian Jackson, who came in as a pinch-runner in the eighth, singled to right-center. Nomar Garciaparra then drew an intentional walk, and Millar worked the walk that tied the score.
"The at-bats in front of me," Nixon said, "those guys dictated the entire inning."
"We had great at-bats in the ninth inning that led up to Trot hitting the grand slam," Little added.
Nixon's heroics seemed less probable after he took a pitch off his right hand in his previous at-bat. After enduring a pitch from former Boston hurler Rheal Cormier in the eighth, Nixon grabbed his hand and writhed in pain as he made his way to first base.
But it didn't appear to affect him in the ninth.
"It seemed OK to finish out the game," Little said of Nixon's hand, "but we'll have to check it tomorrow."
The grand slam, coupled with an RBI single in both the third and fourth, gave Nixon a career-high six RBIs in the game.
The importance of winning a game like this certainly wasn't lost in the visiting clubhouse. After all, the Red Sox took an early-morning flight Monday and ended up playing a four-hour, four-minute marathon that included five lead changes and 12 total pitchers used. Every Red Sox position player but one entered the game, and the team had to fly to Chicago on Monday evening. But the win had its rewards.
"This is by far the best," Todd Walker said of this victory compared with the team's 78 others this season.
"This was a great win for us as a team, everybody contributed," Boston starter Jeff Suppan said.
"Given the circumstances, with an early flight this morning and then having to fly to Chicago, this was a huge win," Walker added.
While scoring seven runs, Boston still left 13 runners on base before the ninth. Garciaparra, whose .323 batting average going into Monday's game ranked third in the AL, went 1-for-5 with seven runners left on base. Garciaparra also had a walk and an RBI on a groundout in the third.
David Ortiz appeared to put all the missed chances behind the team in the eighth. With Boston down a run, Ortiz delivered a two-run double off the center-field wall to give the Red Sox the lead.
But the bullpen allowed three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Mike Timlin yielded a leadoff home run to pinch-hitter Ricky Ledee before walking two batters and hitting another. With the bases full, Little yanked Timlin in favor of Alan Embree. But Embree surrendered a two-run single to Jim Thome, making the heroics in the ninth necessary.
Suppan struggled though six innings of work, giving up a pair of runs in the first, second and fourth innings.
"Location was the key for me today and I missed a few spots," Suppan said.
Little liked his starter's resolve. He sent Suppan out to bat for himself in the top of the fifth after the right-hander had given up six runs -- five earned -- in four innings to that point. Suppan laid down a sacrifice bunt and went back out to the mound the following inning.
"After the bunt, he gave us two more good innings," Little said. "That was the key. We didn't have to use another body."
In the fifth and sixth, Suppan allowed just a walk and, most important, no runs.
Byung-Hyun Kim, whose closer status has been in question recently, cleaned up the eighth by getting Pat Burrell to ground into a double play to end the inning. Kim (6-4) also pitched the ninth and earned the win.
"This was nothing but positive for BK," Little said.

Crappy doesn't begin to describe it... Now on to Texas for M's... M prediction: we're going to get blown out one of the games by the Texas offense and win the other 2... Isn't Juan Gonzalez done for the year? That's good, he's always a Mariner killer... Maybe they'll have a bunch of young guys from AAA to beat up on... We need some kind of streak just to get back to even in the WC and West...

Burkett is a FA, NOT COMING BACK.... Suppan is FA, NOT COMING BACK, AND FOSSUM IS PART OF THE SCHILLING TRADE... the rotation would be (if Schilling accepts the trade) Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Derek Lowe, Tim Wakefield, and then Byung-Hun Kim... now that my friend is a VERY powerful rotation.

I found this at espn.com
ESPN.com news services
Alex Rodriguez told media in the Dominican Republic on Friday that he's informed the Rangers of two teams to which he would accept a trade.
And, not that the rivalry needs more coals thrown on it, the Red Sox and Yankees are Rodriguez's preferences, The Dallas Morning News, citing a major league source, reported Sunday.
Even so, the likelihood of Boston or the Yankees finding maneuverability to acquire the shortstop's salary -- he has seven years left on a 10-year, $252 million contract -- is very slim, given their offseason priorities.
The Red Sox have Nomar Garciaparra at short and are weighed down by Manny Ramirez's $20 million-per-year salary. Boston had looked into the possibility of acquiring Rodriguez earlier this offseason until Ramirez went unclaimed on waivers.
The Yankees need a right fielder and starting pitching and have captain

Its Shawn Estes... ahhh i wouldnt be to sure about the Cubs rotation being better than the Red Sox rotation if Schilling accepts... i mean 1 thru 3 matches right with the Cubs and Lowe actually beats out Zambrano for the number 3... and Wakefield and Kim are better starters than Shawn Estes and Clement by far... both of them suck.

You dont know much Red Sox baseball if you think Kim was better as a closer than a starter... when Kim started he looked very good, but when he moved to closer... well he wasnt quite as good. If you recall also that WAKEFIELD was the MAN in the playoffs this year and pretty much wiped out EVERY team he pitched against, no one could hit him... he was fantastic.

The no trade clause is just a part of his contract... so if he is traded to some **** team like the Mets or something he can veto it... he is considering the trade to Boston alot and has a huge decision to make and has til 5pm (Eastern) Saturday to decide either way. They have a better pitching staff than the Yankees now. With a starting rotation of Martinez, Schilling, Lowe, Wakefield, and most likely Kim... no one can match that starting rotation in the MLB... the Cubs come the closest. The Red Sox will NOT suck this year... Theo Epstein has said that they are going to spend money... and there will be plenty of activity in 2 weeks when the Winter meetings start. This year will be awesome for the Red Sox.

They tend to have this sense of arrogance that pisses me off. And yet at the same time they rely on stretching the rules to their advantage as much as possible. It's not cheating or anything but I just don't think it's a coincidence that the same city that built the Green Monster also happens to have the smallest playing surface of any pro hockey arena. And yet at the same time Boston fans are nearly as fanatical as New York fans. Which is fine and all but really it just doesn't all add up for me.
But the Pats are ok.

Come on... they built the Green Monster and Fenway Park when? 1912? Come on... they werent even thinking about that back then. And if you want to talk about the short porch in left field at Fenway... lets talk about Yankee Stadiums left field... i guess thats stretching the rules to you also. And the small ice thing for the Bruins... does that even make sense considering they were WAY better in the Boston Garden... not one championship in the Fleetcenter... and the small ice gives the same advantage to the road team as the home team... and for the arrogance... who on the Red Sox has it? I mean Kevin Millar is probably the nicest guy youd ever meet, and theres really no one i can think of that is arrogant on the Bruins or the Celtics... so name a few people that are arrogant.

Hell I like the idea for you guys to get Green. Green always tears apart the Rockies when he plays us. I would like to see Nomar in COlorado a few times a year that would be pretty cool. I think that the A-Rod deal will go through. I have a feeling that uness Steinbrenner goes and buys three or four big name guys over the winter the Red Sox are gonna take the division next year.

I am a huge fan of Todd and Larry. I am wondering what off-season deals we make this year but it looks likewe won't do much. We will probably have to wait a couple more years before anything really exciting happens with Rockies baseball again.

Personally, I feel that A-Rod is overrated. Yes, he's a good player, but he's not as good as having Nomar and Manny.
I have a feeling that if we let go of Nomar, he's going to have an amazing next few years and make us pay. He's in the best shape out of anyone in baseball right now, (look at the SI cover with him shirtless if you don't believe me) and has only slumped this past year because he was coming off of an injury. When one looks at someone like Jason Varitek, the year after he broke his arm he sucked. But this year was a career year for him. Nomar's next two years are likely to be the same. He's in his prime.

I love Nomar. Him and Trot Nixon are my favorite players. But I'm not happy with Manny. WHy you ask! This guy says he wants to play for the Yanks. Hello Manny!!! They are our rivals. Something he should of never said. I buy a bunch of RedSox Tickets every year. (As a matter of fact Im in a online waiting room right now for tickets) As most of you now the Red Sox have the highest ticket prices. One reason there so high is because of a big fat contract for lazy ass Ramirez that wants to play for the yanks. So I would rather be paying to see someone with a big contract that says I want to play in Boston. Now its sad that we might have to lose the best Red Sox player ever. Nomar Garciaparra( Update I just got tickets for 2 sox games YES!!!) I wish they could keep both Nomar and Arod. Put either Arod or nomar at third. But this is just a dream. No I wish Manny would shut his mouth about playing for the Yanks. If he wouldn't of said that I would be happy with him and Nomar staying. Rather then having Arod come.

How dare he?!?!
I don't blame him. He only turned down about $7M over 3 years, which when you consider Texas' lack of state income tax and extreme lower cost of living, doesn't translate into that much of a loss. The only real thing that he turned down was going down in history as a Yankee. There's a lot of tradition there that he walked away from. To me, not having his jersey retired and not being honored on the Walk of Fame is worth a lot more than the money.
That being said, I'm not surprised he chose the Astros. Steinbrenner is a real jackass and it's been rumored that he didn't particularly like Andy a whole lot. He'll be loved in Houston ten times more than New York.
I do find it humorous that a lot of New Yorkers on the Yankees message board have a vicious case of sour grapes. Most are split between wanting to burn GS at the stake or being convinced that Andy wasn't any good to begin with.

Uhhh, not really there pal, the Red Sox are just trying to compete with the New York Yankees. The Chicago Cubs are making moves also, so what next? Are they going to become the New York Yankees too because they got Derek Lee, LaTroy Hawkins, and they also got last year Armis Ramirez, and Kenny Lofton. The Cubs wil be making PLENTY of moves this December too, so please dont whine about one Red Sox move.

1. Hes the higest payed player, but were getting a guy who WANTS to be here in Boston (and the number 1 player in baseball) rather than having a big baby in Manny Ramirez that doesnt want to be here.

I read a rumor at the redsox message board. It will make me feel a little better about Nomar going. When Nomar gets traded to the Dodgers we will take the guys we get from them and a prospect and send them to Whitesox for Magllio Ordonez. He would be our Left Fielder. But this is just a rumor.
Im from Fall River Massachusetts. Im about 45 min from boston. I also got tickets for 6 games so far. Man I cant wait. If Nomar goes I hope we don't boo him when he comes to Fenway.

Reports circulated Wednesday that the Red Sox have conditionally agreed to trade shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to the White Sox for Magglio Ordonez.
Newsday cited baseball sources for its report about the deal.
However, Newsday reported that the deal would be completed only if the Red Sox are able to acquire Alex Rodriguez from the Rangers for outfielder Manny Ramirez.
There were additional reports Wednesday that claimed the Red Sox would include pitchers Scott Williamson and Byung-Hyun Kim in a Garciaparra trade to Chicago, and still others said the White Sox, as a way to move salary, would then deal Garciaparra to the Dodgers.

Manny I will definitely be glad to be rid of. I've hated him ever since he got here. And it isn't the whole "I hate the press" thing... he just really gets on my nerves.
I guess what happens, will happen. And if Nomar gets traded, it was good whlie it lasted. The one thing that makes me mad about him is that he turned down that contract... but then again it makes me mad that anybody is getting paid 5 mil. a year at the least to play major league baseball... but what can you do? Nothin'.
I heard about the Ordonez thing, but it doesn't seem very likely.

Just got this off of ESPN.com
NEW YORK -- The Yankees are in serious discussions with the Rangers to acquire Alex Rodriguez and move him to third base, where he'd play alongside shortstop Derek Jeter, if you are to believe Newsday.
The 600,000-plus circulation newspaper on suburban Long Island, N.Y., reports in its Saturday editions that A-Rod is desperate to get out of Texas and would be willing to switch positions.
The New York Post, which is usually leading the way when sensational stories pop up, is reporting today only that the Yankees have asked the Rangers about such a trade, in which Alfonso Soriano would leave New York.
A source close to the conversations told ESPN Saturday that talks are in the early stages but that it's a "longshot" the deal will ever be completed because of "many hurdles" that stand in the way.
Soriano, 25, is signed only through 2004, for $5.4 million. He can't be a free agent until after the 2006 season. The 28-year-old Rodriguez is owed $189 million over the next seven years, although he can opt out after 2007. Thus, the Yankees would take on an extra $183.6 million guaranteed if the deal is consummated.
However, according to Newsday's source, the Rangers would be willing to foot some of that bill. The American League source also told Newsday that the two clubs talked late into Friday night about the trade.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman admitted to the Post on Friday that he has approached the Rangers about a deal, but was initially turned down.
"There are many times I float weather balloons to my counterparts," Cashman told the Post. "I won't comment on trade rumors, but it should come as no surprise that I am constantly floating weather balloons to my counterparts. Ninety-nine [percent] of them get popped and fall to the ground."
The Post also reported that the Yankees would likely have to give up Jose Contreras as well as minor-league catcher Dioner Navarro in such a trade.
The Red Sox and Rangers talked extensively this winter about a deal involving A-Rod, but could not get it done, thanks to A-Rod's contract. The two teams did agree to a trade in December, but the union refused to approve it, declaring that A-Rod was setting an unacceptable precedent by diminishing his contract's value.
Rangers owner Tom Hicks then announced that Rodriguez would stay with the Rangers, and last month the team named A-Rod its captain.
The Yankees recently lost third baseman Aaron Boone to what likely is a season-ending knee injury. The trade would create a void at second base for the Yankees. Enrique Wilson and Miguel Cairo would have to share the duties.
Rodriguez, who has 345 career homers, is coming off an MVP season in which he hit .298 with 47 homers and 118 RBI.
Looks like the Yankees arent going to let the Sox get everything they want this off-season.
