Where there's a Willy
'Pirate's' Depp to take on Dahl role for helmer Burton

By MICHAEL FLEMING

After meeting with director Tim Burton, Johnny Depp is poised for his third teaming with the director on "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Depp has been offered the role of Willy Wonka in the Warner Bros. adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic.

Depp and Burton, who previously made "Edward Scissorhands" and "Ed Wood," came away from their meeting sparked to make the film and negotiations are expected to begin shortly.

Depp is coming off "Pirates of the Caribbean," the kind of summer hit that gets an actor a sweeter deal. Talks could certainly break down between WB and Depp's UTA reps, but the betting is that Depp will be managing a brigade of chocolate-making Oompa Loompas next year.

Pic is being produced by Plan B partners Brad Grey, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, and Michael Siegel, who manages the interests of the Dahl estate.

The pairing of Burton and Depp would establish the film as a likely golden ticket for Warners. The studio has moved cautiously over the years to mount the remake, working in concert with the author's estate. Even though Dahl adapted his novel for the 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," he wasn't thrilled with the result.

WB brass is eager to revive the pic about a mysterious chocolate maker's attempt to find a worthy successor. Aside from merchandising and DVD opportunities, the hope is that a successful pic could spawn a stage musical.

A script for the film is still being readied. Scott Frank wrote a draft, followed by Gwyn Lurie, and Warners has hired Pamela Pettler to write the latest version. She got the job after scripting "The Corpse Bride," the Mike Johnson-directed stop-motion animation film for Warner Bros. about a man who inadvertently marries a corpse.

"The Corpse Bride," which Burton is producing, features stop-motion animation like that of "The Nightmare Before Christmas," and Burton impressed by Pettler's draft.

PEACE, Mike

Indeed....

While nothing's official, it didn't say he was for sure doing it, but it's looking up for now.

Depp is one of (if not THE) most under-rated actor of this generation, and I think he'll be excellent as Wonka!

And, of course. Willy Wonka is in the best hands as possible with Burton. Here's hoping it isn't too "kiddy".

He's not really under-rated.

I seriously hope it's made official. :)

Edit: Btw, it'll be their 4th pairing. Sleepy Hollow does count.

Sure he is!
Remember, we live in a world where Ben Affleck is the worlds most famous actor at the moment!!

Ask the average person who the top 10 best actors are right now, and he won't make it!! But for me, he's easily in the top 5...

Well, that's true, but it looks like Affleck might do a lot better with Paycheck.

Burton's a great director who has his own vision he'll go with. No need to worry about the film being to "kiddie"...

Johnny Depp is under-rated... compared to Ben Affleck. Thats about it though. Otherwise he's well known by everyone, and loved by everyone. And actually I know a majority of people like Depp over Affleck. If anything, Depp being Willy Wonka would get people in the seats.

So no, he's far from being under-rated. If anything, he's actually over-rated. But i'd say he's just right. Not too hyped, but definitly not unknown and is totally enjoyed.

This is great news! I definitely want to see the movie now. Who can resist seeing Mr. Edward Scissorhands himself running a cracked out version of Candyland?

And by the way, I consider him under-rated simply because he doesn't really receive enough accolades or recognition for his wonderful performances. The Academy shafts him year after year and he is known more as a good looking guy than an actor.

i think if he got at much publicity as ben affleck he would be overrated, i think the level of publicity he gets now is good, he is talented and everyone knows he is talented, he doesnt need to be on every magazine cover to get people to see his movies.
infact if he was i would hesitate to see his movies, just the way nobody saw gigli because the stars are too famous.
of course he used to be like that back when he was a teenage but i heard somewhere he didnt want to be seen as a teen idol and tried to get away from that image, so i respect him very much.

This film has huge potential. Trust me Johnny Depp will not dissapoint!!! Do you guys think the Oompa Loompas will sing in this adaptation? I think the movie would feel wierd if they left out the songs.

Burton is gonna a good job on Charlie that I'm really psyching out for it. Oh it's gonna be a while alright. Oh well I'll go and watch Planet Of The Apes or something. A m I the only one who enjoys Burton's version??? Then again there's always Mars Attacks... "DON'T RUN...WE'RE YOUR FRIENDS." ZAP ZAP!!!

you know what? This might not be good, because the original was so good, but this version will be really P.C., They'll probably make "cultural diverse" kids, and they'll tone down some of wonkas comments. But, i still think it'll be worth seeing, especially to see depp come out with a cane and slowly walk towards the kids in sexual predator fashion...lol.
