This may have already been discussed somewhere else, I don't know, but I did a search and came up with nothing. So, I feel it is my civic duty to warn fellow fans of late-'80s early-'90s rock about this horrible, horrible occurrence.
There I was browsing through the CDs at the store today and I came across a Skid Row CD called "ThickSkin". I didn't remember them putting out an album by that name, so I flipped it over, examined it a little, and holy crap! It's a 2003 release! I was ecstatic. New Skid Row, the only thing cooler than that would be new Guns-N-Roses. So I of course bought the CD and rushed home to play it, and there my elation came to it's end.
Firstly and foremostly, there is no Sebastian Bach. There's some clown named Johnny Solinger on lead vocals. The sound is completely different, and I think what they're trying to go for is the newer Puddle Of Mudd/Limp Bizkit type of thing. It does not in the slightest resemble the band that put out such great tunes as "Youth Gone Wild", "Wasted Time", "18 And Life", et cetera. The songs really aren't bad, I guess, and maybe if it was another band I wouldn't have been too unimpressed. But I wouldn't be too impressed, either. It's average stuff by today's standards, but far inferior to the Skid Row of yore.
And here's the pisser. We all know the much-loved and fondly remembered diddy "I Remember You", right? A true classic of what most people call the "hair band" era, one of the songs from that period that's stood the test of time and remains just as effective today as it was then. It still gets airplay. Well, there's a tune on this ThickSkin album called "I Remember You Two". I saw this when I was at the store and got excited, but cautiously so, wondering if they could really follow up that song successfully, but anxious to find out. That was of course before I realized Sebastian wasn't the singer. I none-the-less put this song on the minute I walked through the door, and I had to stop it halfway through. I kid you not. It's the same song, but sped up and with a heavy drum beat and sounding much like one of the many remakes by the newer bands of today, like Disturbed's "Shout" or Limp's "Faith" and et cetera. They took what's a truly timeless, emotionally effective song and just totally massacred it. It is this straw right here that, for me, breaks the camel's back. This CD is now headed for the garbage can. I'm ashamed of Skid Row for putting out this blasphemous crap. Sebastian Bach is probably throwing a bottle at someone right now, because these people have disgraced a band that was obviously carried by him all along. I hope Bach does something solo and kicks their asses.
I've gone on a bit longer than I intended to about this. But I was pretty upset. Remember that album Motley Crue did around '94 or so with the non-Vince Neil singer? The album with stuff like "Hooligan's Holiday" and similar crap? Well this is the Skid's equivalent to that sucktacular vomit-heap. Anyone who sees this CD in the store thinking that you're gonna get something similar to "Slave To The Grind" or their self-titled, think again. Steer clear of this sh**.
