No surprise that the pairing of Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees was a big draw, but did anyone realize how big a draw? Freddy vs. Jason's opening day take of $13.8 million seemed to point to an opening weekend above American Wedding and around the same as last week's PG-13 opener SWAT with between $36 and 37 million. (Remember that this is with NYC and a couple other cities without power and with few movie theatres open)
SWAT drops down to #2 with an estimated weekend take of $17 million, which is around a 54% dropoff. Over the course of the week, it looked like Freaky Friday would overtake SWAT by the weekend but Friday's #s showed that SWAT was holding strong and will probably still be around $2 million more than Freaky Friday this weekend.
The biggest surprised has to be Kevin Costner's return to Westerns in Open Range, which appeared from out of nowhere a few weeks back and has built so much buzz and advanced hype due to overwhelmingly positive reviews that it might make a serious play for the Top 3 with $14 to 15 million for the weekend. Except it to expand wider next weekend and to continue to do well with so much good word of mouth.
Uptown Girls will probably make around $12 million, which was the high end of what I had predicted, although it probably not have the lasting power of Open Range.
No surprise that Warners moronic skateboard comedy, Grind, bombed..it did worse than expected on its opening day and will probably end the weekend with around $3 million. It will be gone shortly afterwards.
