IGN FilmForce has been tipped off that Lord of the Rings co-star Sean Astin might be in the running to become one of the Fantastic Four. Although the film is still looking for a director to replace Peyton Reed, 20th Century Fox has already announced a December 2004 release date for it. That would require FF to begin filming in Vancouver by the end of this year or the beginning of 2004, which will be difficult to accomplish since Mark Frost's screenplay hasn't even been finished yet.

According to our scooper, Sean Astin recently visited a comic book store in New York City "asking about Fantastic Four comics (knowing nothing about the Fantastic Four) and walked out with a couple armfuls of them. Research perhaps? Just thought you might find that interesting."

We did, at least enough to investigate the matter further. That's when things got ... interesting.

IGN FilmForce contacted Sean Astin's public relations rep whose office issued an official "no comment" on the matter – neither confirming, denying or elaborating on whether or not Astin was in the running for FF.

Requests for confirmation or denial from Marvel Studios went unanswered.

Might the 32-year-old Astin portray Johnny Storm (a.k.a. The Human Torch)? Ben Grimm (a.k.a. The Thing)? The Moleman?! Or does Astin want to direct Fantastic Four? He has helmed a number of TV episodes, as well as The Long and Short of It (co-written with his LotR pal Dominic Monaghan).

Fans might remember that Astin was previously considered to play Foggy Nelson in Daredevil but lost out to Jon Favreau.

Sean Astin's credits include Rudy, Toy Soldiers and The Goonies. According to his official site, Astin is also planning on producing and directing author Erik Larson's real life disaster tale Isaac's Storm.

The Moleman would be good - if he keeps on his LOTR weight. Johnny maybe - but he'd have to shed some ass.

I think I'm the only person who found the first Fantastic Four movie slightly entertaining. I mean yeah it was terrible and really cheezy, but as a fan of the comimc, I thought it was decent for the time.

Haha! He was Mikey, eh? That was probably the worst acting performance out of all the characters in that movie.
