Who is the best singer of all time for any rock band?

I'm gonna say Bono. He's got fantastic range and can cover alot of ground.

I honestly couldn't say who was the best but it would have to be someone who was unstopable!!!!

Freddy Murcury for instance - Now THAT'S Range and variety!

I've always thought the best rock singer of all time was Paul Rogers of Bad Company. His voice has a really good range, and it's unmistakable. When you hear him, you immediately know, "That's Paul Rogers!"

I'm gonna have to say Freddie Mercury. Absolutely incredible vocal range, and one of the best performers ever.

Following him have to be: Plant, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Lennon and Eddie Vedder.

I just remembered a few I had forgotten, while not the best singers technicly, their voices fit well with their music:

Kurt Cobain
Layne Stanley

Optimus Magnus
08-22-2003, 05:07 AM
I am with 'smokiechimp'. FREDDIE MURCURY

But also there is:

Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), he's nicknames 'The Air Raid Siren'

Meatloaf

Tommy Lee (I think, if not him, then the singer for Motley Crue

Paul Stanly, Gene Simmons and Peter Criss

(Although Paul sings the body of the songs, Gene sings 'God of Thunder, KISS's most heavy song and Peter sings the award winning ballad 'Beth')

Priss Asigiri (J - Rock singer)

I just stumbled onto this post and I would like to add my two cents if no one minds.

My favorite rock singer of all time is Michael Matijevic now known as Miljenko Matijevic(birth name). He is the singer of the band Steelheart. In my opinion one of the purest rock voices ever. And man can he hit the high notes. And as a true singer should...he pulls it off live just as well as on an album.

I think you will agree...maybe not one of your favs but I think you will give him credit for being an incredible talent.

Thanx for reading.

I agree with most of those mentioned already. Of course I can't believe Paul McCartney doesn't get more respect. He had great range and control of his voice, and could sing just about any kind of song. I'd have to give him the number one spot.

I would also like to add Steve Walsh of Kansas fame to the list. Not so much anymore, but up though the 80's his voice was in top form. He had range and control, plus he's the only singer that I'm aware of that did handstands (on his keyboard no less) during performances.

That may be so but neither can hold a candle to the beautiful majestic vocal talents of a one Heather Findlay of Mostly Autumn. Brings a tear to my eye at times. But Scabbia and Lee are amazing. There is something missing in Evanescence that I just cannot describe though. They just don't blow me away despite Amy's voice.

Speaking of female vocal talents Renee Fleming is incredible. Her voice on ROTK really brought me to tears.

Lemmy! He is the band Motorhead. Motorhead is Lemmy and Lemmy is Motorhead. Without him, it would have been nothing. The lineup kept changing, no one else mattered.

Then on the other end of the spectrum you have a band like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which would have been an improved group withOUT their lead singer.

I'm glad to see Freddy Mercury getting his props. He would be my vote for number one. There's a lot of other excellent singers listed in this thread. There's been a lot of mention of Roger Daltrey of The Who, but Pete Townsend is pretty good, too. I'm going to throw in for Sting (during The Police days) and Roger Waters and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd.

When I was visiting New York I had the chance to hear an awesome band, The Stick. Their lead singer ( I think his name was Jake) was awesome- completely unique and awesome on stage. At times he reminded me of Jim Morrison, Axl Rose, Ian Curtis, and Iggy Pop- but during most of their set I just stood there with my jaw dropped. I've never heard (or yet, seen) anything like it.
You have to check them out- *bzzzzzzzzzzzzzt*

Agreed, high five.

For the sake of narrowing the field, I'm only going to mention active singers in my little list. These guys' voices pretty much belong to themselves, though one imparticular has been MUCH imitated.

1. Justin Hawkins of the Darkness (The Darkness broke up, but he'll get something else going soon)
2. Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam (Anyone who knows me knows my bias)
3. Thom Yorke of Radiohead (Puts an 'H' in 'Tom' and an 'e' on 'York' and gets away with it because if people tried to call him on it, he'd probably sing until they died of "over blissing")
4. Brandon Boyd of Incubus (I like the little wimp)
5. Maynard James Keenan of Tool (Range and lung capacity like a mofo... now that I think of it, he probably is a mofo)
6. Adam Levine of Maroon 5 (This dude can sing, even though he always seems like he's compensating for something. It's as if he's afraid no one would think he was sexy or heterosexual unless he actually got within inches of bonking a chick in every frickin' video)

I'm probably overlooking a LOT of people, but alas, se la vie.

Or however the hell you spell it.
