10 TERMINATOR 3 (T3): THE RISE OF THE MACHINES WARNER BROS. 1,275 470,000 369 144,833,000
No real surprise as far as the #1 movie as SWAT took $13.5 million on its opening day, aiming for a weekend take between $35 and 37 million, by no means a blockbuster but still a respectable opening considering the slew of action and cop movies this past summer. It should do well enough to make back its money, which is a rarity for Sony this summer after Charlie's Angels, Bad Boys 2, Gigli and Hollywood Homicide.
More surprising is the success of Disney's remake of "Freaky Friday" whigh is well on its way to becoming one of Jamie Lee Curtis' biggest opening hits as well as Disney's third successive hit this summer. It made $7.8 million yesterday, which was more than its opening day take of $6 million, and it seems to be shooting for a first weekend take between $25 and 27 million.
Some pretty drastic dropoffs in the sequel department as American Wedding, Spy Kids, Bad Boys 2 and the Tomb Raider sequel all had substantial dropoffs, losing almost half as much business as last Friday. Of course, Disney's other two movies, Pirates and Finding Nemo continue to generate business and maintain their positions in the Top 10 proving that this will indeed by the summer of Michael Eisner.
