Nah, Smith will still pull out a decent BO take. He's got a pretty loyal following. I know that he's a big supporter of Affleck, but he doesn't seem to realize that people go see Kevin Smith movies because they like Kevin Smith, not because Ben Affleck is in them. You could replace Affleck with any number of other actors, and it wouldn't make any difference.

i think a good marketing decision for Jersey Girl would be "From the man who brought you Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, etc. etc., comes a new blah blah starring Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler." because i heard j-lo's not even in it that mucn.

JG has been getting great buzz from test screenings and Kevin does have a very loyal following and Jello, er...J.Lo. apparently dies fairly early in the movie so that should appease some people.
I think JG will do very well, but some critics probably won't forget Gigli and they'll hold it against JG.

Jersey Girl is going to perform better for one reason: Kevin Smith. He has a pretty good following and people will see his films no matter what.

It will affect the movie somewhat (we're already talking about it). It could work out to be a good thing though. Perhaps many didn't even know about Jersey Girl until people started to question whether or not Gigli would affect it. Smith rules and I'll see it either way.

I absolutely love Kevin Smith, and nothing will keep me out of theaters to see Jersey Girl. I can take comfort in knowing that it's humanly impossible for it to be worse than Gigli.

Kevin Smith had better pray it doesn't.

Hopefully Jlo needs to go away.

I think Ben Affleck blew it by starring in any movie with J-Lo...........with the amount of hype surrounding them, he was just asking for ridicule with this latest movie (GIGLI). Hmmmmmm.......... if you can't pronounce it, who'll even see it? LOL!!!! HA HA!

Can anyone give me an artistic reason for making these kinds of films?? It's got to be about money and nothing else. Big star equals big money. How can a director take his career seriously after making a movie like this?? What a waste. To think of all the great stories that are turned down by studios and yet something like this gets the green light. How depressing.

I honestly have to admit I'm a little worried for Kevin. Not because I think Jersey Girl will bomb, because the Kevin Smith loyals will still turn out and see it. But I think it will call up some doubts about him. I think he's done a marvelous job so far of not following the crowd and making his own decisions. When people told him Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was a bad idea, he replied he was doing it for the fans and he gave the people exactly what they wanted.
This go around I think Jlo's bringing in some questions about her abilities in a film. And thusly, people will be critical about Kevin casting a crappy actress.
Honestly, from the beginning I've thought her a bad decision. Because I truly find her to be a horrendous actress. I don't think she does anything more than deliver lines on cue. And I think it'll turn out bad for Jersey Girl

Jersey Girl will be another hit for Kevin and it will be a really good film I bet. You all have to understand that this is about Kevin and not JLo

My guess is the first weekend will consist of Kevin Smith loyalists and it may appear a bomb because Gigli will make the general public doubtful...then the second weekend it will recover big from word of mouth. IT should make a pretty good profit. I doubt it's got a high budget. Most Smith movies don't.

I think the important question is will Gigli take Jlo's career down with it.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but apparently Kevin was reading this thread. I just heard on the radio that he is actually editing J-Lo out of Jersey Girl. Well, not entirely, but now she apparently gets killed during the first fifteen minutes of the film. That pretty much reduces her role to a cameo if the story is true.
But you what idiots DJ's can be, so this may be just a rumor. Can anyone substantiate this?

How do you know Kevin Smith was reading this thread? Did he mention Coming Soon somewhere?
Kevin, if you're reading this, you kick ass. Keep the good **** coming.

I just thought it was a new development, and if what I heard was in fact true, then maybe her part was simply cut down further. Even with rumors there is usually a grain of truth to them somewhere.

It was all part of the script in the first place. Maybe he is cutting down her screen time because of Gigli, but I doubt it. He does what he wants to do.

I think the movie will still do well because it is Kevin Smith, and his fan base will still support him. And there's something about Kevin that brings out the best in Ben Affleck. Honestly, his best roles (Chasing Amy and Dogma) were done by Kevin Smith. It'll still be a decent movie, but there could be some backlash, ya never know, we'll find out in February of 2004.

1'm just wondering
since we are talking about JG box office totals
how many of you plan on seeing it in theaters?

I'll most likely see it in theatres. Definitely take the train down to Red Bank and see it somewhere in Monmouth Co, NJ. Hehe.

I hope not. At least this way they won't market it as a Bennifer Flick. And I am aslo not worried about this film being bad. It's ver Chasing Amy which, as we all know, was fantastic
