With Soul Calibur II coming out, I started to wonder why Namco put in these extra characters. I think it finally dawned on me though, the Nintendo theory:
With PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube you get different special characters...why would namco choose these characters though when they could have had cooler characters to go with?!?
ps2 has Heihachi from Namco's Tekken series...ok, so Namco owns the rights to this game and can develop it how they see fit, I can see why they would pick this character.
Xbox has Spawn. As reported by IGN, Namco contacted McFarlane to use Spawn in their game, McFarlane agreed and in return, makes the action figures based on the game. Namco is also making an upcoming Spawn game...interesting. So Namco could be using SCII to plug their upcoming Spawn game.
But what about Gamecube?!? Link is obviously the most poplular character in the Nintendo series. Why would Nintendo let Namco use their "adult" Link character when they are trying so hard to push their toon shaded Zelda into players hands. I for one was pissed when I first heard that Zelda was going to be toon shaded after seeing the demo they showed at Space World 2000 featuring an amazing demo of an Adult Link doing battle with Ganon. Then Nintendo came back and said they changed their minds but an Adult Link game wasn't out of the question. Miyamato said recently in EGM that the next Zelda game would be cel shaded, but "maybe the next one..." (to paraphrase). Could Namco be developing a Legend of Zelda game for Nintendo? It wouldn't be the first time Nintendo lent out their character to a third party developer. Nintendo did just that with Legend of Zelda for GBC to Capcom...and this is one of the best Zelda games. I for one would love to see Namco develop a Legend of Zelda game based on what I have seen of Soul Calibur.
What do you think? Am I on to something or did I smoke too much crack at lunch???
PS I love Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker after playing it :p
