Ive been really looking into this superbit stuff and I guess they say the picture is a lot sharper as well as the sound. Does anyone own any SuperBit dvds. Perhaps give me some insight on which films would look better. The Mask of Zorro would be great to see in that. or with Gattaca and its sci-fi look. The only problem is that not all of them have Special Features. thats one of the draw backs of getting those.. that and the covers( there alot smaller with that silver border on it).
What should be on Superbit?

All I know about the SUPERTBIT DVD's is that it has got better picture and better sound, and the object of having a DVD player is to have an EXCELLENT performance of the films you're watching. But, there is that issue of no Special Features, that is another thing for having a DVD player, for the buyer to have the extra material. It's a waste of money if there isn't really anything to do after the film. (IMO) But I am glad that SONY has been putting out SUPERBIT DELUXE with Disc 1 being a SUPERBIT DVD, and DISC 2 being all of the Special Features.....I have to say that I like this option better with the SUPERBIT DELUXE. Anyway that's what I think.....I too have been thinking about getting a Superbit DVD....only the ones that are my favorites.....so i can have more DVD's that are DEMO-DISC material.
These are my choices for the SUPERBIT DVD'S:
-The Fifth Element
-Gattaca
-Vertical Limit
-The Big Hit
-A Knight's Tale
-The Mask of Zorro (Superbit Deluxe)
-Resident Evil
-XXX
-Charlie's Angels (Superbit Deluxe)
-The Patriot (Superbit Deluxe)
check out the website: www.superbitdvd.com if you need more info.
hope this helps :)

I have 2 SUPERBIT dvds Panic Room and Bad Boys. The quality of sound & picture is very good on both. The only problem is the lack of special features.

The only Superbit DVD I've watched is Punch - Drunk Love. The sound is great but the picture is about the same to me.

Superbit has DTS sound, taking up more room on disk 1 (if you get a 2 disk set). Some superbits get 2 disks, Charlies Angels is one of them.

The only exception I can make with SuperBit is Punch Drunk Love, since it acutally has extras.

Agreed.
And the "Adaptation" Superbit DVD is a joke. The picture-transfer is barely average and the sound is nothing to write home about. Essentially, Superbit DVDs are just completely ordinary barebones DVDs with a fancy and catchy (not to mention misleading) name on the cover.

I rented Punch Drunk Love on DVD, a while ago...i like the movie...but the special features.....what are they??????...they don't even have a real featurette with interviews, and stuff. The movie is good, but the special features are just fluff.

To the person who started this thread, if Insider and I agree on something, then whatever we agree on is true. Let me tell you, it is VERY RARE he and myself ever see eye to eye on something. So again: SuperBit sucks.

If you only have a "regular" tv will you notice any difference in picture quality at all?

DVD's are near perfect quality anyway so Superbit won't be much different. Superbit and dearer and have no extras, Normal DVD's are much better.

The only reason to buy Superbit dvds is if you own a kick-@$$ home theatre system. And I'm talking spending a serious amount of $$$$ on one. Otherwise, only a keen eye and ear will be able to tell the difference.

I bought Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in the Superbit format and you could not even change the language from Mandarin to English. Talk about a waste of disc space.......
How crazy is that?
I have heard the 2-Disc Superbit Deluxe editions are worth it with the extras.

Get the special edition of Bad Boys, not the Super Bit. The picture and sound are just as good on the SE, plus it has special features.

There are some UK DVDs that are superbit, but not marked as ones. There's SpyKids, Charlie's Angels (which has more features than the standard disk) and Panic Room.
And DVDs such as LOTR and SW are superbit, but not really marketed as them.

The UK version of "Panic Room" isn't superbit. The transfer is far worse on the UK DVD than on the US DVD. Trust me, I've seen them both.

I think Superbit is a waste of time and disc space. So what, it's a higher bitrate, which in theory is higher quality, but I can't see how it can be noticable. I see zero flaws on my regular DVDs that were professionally encoded, and you can't improve on that.
And sound? If the sound is digitally encoded (such as Dolby Digital, or DTS), then the bitrate won't even matter! The sound will be the same, so long as you're using a digital decoder and some nice speakers. So unless you're using an analog sound track, I don't see how that can make a difference.
And the downside? The bitrate being higher, you can't fit special features and such on the disc.
IMHO, a waste.

There's nothing wrong with watching a movie in it's original language, especially when it's in mandarin because when the movies are dubbed into English you just don't get the quality of it's original sound

The English dubbing for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was horrible. Almost by Black Mask standards.

With the whole superbit issue .... it depends on the tv and the way you transfer the signal ie... type of cables. If you have a hdtv with component cables or a dvi cable then the picture is sharper and more 3 dimensional looking. this creates better depth in the picture. i purchased bad boys on superbit and was surprised at the difference in pic and aud quality.

You're right, that using a true HDTV with component cables (not DVI, component) is the only feasable way that you could notice a difference between standard and superbit DVDs.
I'd still have to say, however, that the difference can't possibly be worth it -- keep in mind that most of the difference is probably perception. You know it's "Superbit" and expect a difference, and therefore believe you can see it. But seeing as I perceive regular DVDs to be flawless in their compression, there's no way to improve on that. "Superbit" doesn't improve resolution, or contrast, or color depth -- it's simply the same video compressed at a higher bitrate.

I have to tell you guys that if you are watching a film that is very visual ( eye candy ) the Superbit DVDs kick ass. Dark Crystal, Labrynth, Fifth Element, Dracula are all good examples. In regards to the old version of Dark Crystal there is no comparison in pictureor sound. The DTS option is even better. Of course I really notice the difference on my HDTV set using a progressive scan player, still the difference is noticeable on other tv sets and my computer. My only problem is they put them out much later than other versions so you have to wait a long time for them.

I'll say it again. If you have a $15 000 home theatre system, then Superbit DVDs will be the greatest movies of your collection. But for the run of the mill systems (aka standard TV, mediocre DD5.1/DTS system) then Superbits are pointless.
