i like special features on dvds, and special editions of dvds as much as anyone else, but am i the only one who is tired of them having endless editions of dvds that come out all the time. movies like terminator 2 or the american pie movies seem to have endless editions that come out. i do agree that if a dvd was released and it didn't have a whole lot of extras maybe they should have another edition, but why couldn't they have done it right the first time it was released. it is unfair to consumers to have one edition come out soon after the movie, then just a few months later have another version come out. put all the extras on the dvd the first time around, so people don't have to waste money on buying the same movie again. they also do this with the lotr movies. i love the movies but why release a version in august then just a couple of months later in november. why should a person have to buy two versions?

$$$$ Simple as that
If u dont like it dont buy them....Or if u know a better DVD is being released...why not wait for that??

The way Ive tried not to get caught having to buy it again is just check ahead of time.. check the dvd/video releases for months ahead of time. That way you dont buy it until the SP comes out. I was going to buy GoodFellas on dvd but i read that a special edition is being released in a couple of months. I can wait. With Terminator 2...I think I got it right the first time. I forgot the name of the edition but its the one before this new METAL edition came out.

That wasnt the first time...There was a barebones edition of T2....
Then the Ultimate Edition (The one u are talking about)
Then the Extreme Edition....(The newest one)
Now i think they are releasing a single disc edition with a new colour metal case......
Thats alot of versions....

I don`t have anything against tifferent editions of movies on DVDs ,but they should anounce them ahead of time like was done with LOTR.
I experienced that S*** when I bought the "Black Hawk Down " DVD (singel disc) fron US. Then there was a 2 disc version released in Region2 and now there is 3 disc version in Region1

I knew there would be another Black Hawk Down when they released it for the first time, but there was no date for the special edition in the near future, and I really wanted it, so I bought it.
So far, its the only movie I own 2 of.

I'm really happy with New Line, because they've annouced that they won't let their loyal customers "be punished" who have purchased the LOTR Extended DVDs by releasing some kind of "super ultimate" edition of the films after they're all out.
Sometimes the "Ultimates" are rip-offs. Like the Extreme T-2, I checked it out and it didn't look any better than the Ultimate edition which I have. The Ultimate edition has everything I could want (short of maybe a gag reel).

In the case of T2-EE,It gave you all the stuff that UE didn't have:Interactive mode, excellent commentary.T2 is the only film i own 2 versions of.EE is used to wtch the movie, while UE is more for extras

OK, here is what I do everytime. You buy the original edition of some movie that gets re-released, then you hear about the re-release. You take your movie to the store (not Best Buy they won't do it), you tell them yours is skipping or defective. Tell them you don't want your money back, just a new copy of the same movie. You get a new sealed copy of the soon to be re-released movie. The day after the re-release you take your sealed copy back to the store, explain you sent someone up here to get you the new movie, they came back with the old version and you just want to exchange it for the right one and you'll even pay the difference. This could cost you $5 or so, sometimes you'll even get a credit for the difference, but it works like a charm everytime!
:applaud:
Just one way around the companies trying to get you for more money everytime!

They do say in the insert that came with the EE that this was more a companion to the UE, like the editions of LotR.
That's why I like New Line, they only release one edition of a film.

It is coming out on sept 30th i beleive in 2 editions...1 the collectors edition and 2 the gift set which has some collectibles in it... I have an original release of the movie and have seen the new version on dvd and it is slightly improvrd over the old. I am a mob movie fan and plan on having this one in thecollection twice.... Anyone know when goodfellas is going to be re-released in a spec. edi.

my problem isn't so much with new line because new line did anounce it ahead of time, and it is only a couple of months after the first edition, so if people don't want the first edition they can wait. but sometimes you don't know if a dvd will have a special edition because they don't come out for a year or two after. so a lot of times it isn't anounced that their will be a special edition the time that the first edition comes out.
for example, the american pie are done this way, each time another american pie movie is going to come out they release another special edition of the movies. all of the american pie movies have been released about two years apart. so they didn't anounce they were going to come out with new editions until closer of the release new editions which isn't until a couple of years later after the last one, so how are people then going to know to wait for the special edition.

I guess that's the price of being a dvd fan.

I think that the beauty of the DVD format is the ability to have a basic, 'bare bones' edition of the films on DVD, maybe with a few extra features included, but also then a special/extended edition for the real hardcore fans which have a wealth of extra special features.
New Line have really done an exemplary job with the LOTR theatrical cut and Special Extended Editions DVD's. As near a perfect example of what DVD's can be, and how they ideally should be. Added to the fact that fans knew there would be both formats available and that there were no repeated features on the extended editions, what more could you ask for?
Anything beyond 2 editions however is totally unecessary IMO, and in such cases (like T2) it does comes down to blatant commercialism.

I have a feeling Star Wars trilogy will end up the same as terminator and lotr.

I own a version of the 400 blows, and will soon own a different version, the Criterion Collection version, which has new commentaries and extras(the Criterion of this movie had been out of print for a long while, so I had to buy another company's release of it.)
I do like the commentary that is on the one I currently have, so I am thinking about taping the audio, and saving it, and then donating the DVD to the library, and then picking up the Criterion box set of the Antoin Doinell saga...
I had the original DVD of "Amadeus", and I just saw that they released a special 2 disc set, like the "One Flew over the Cuckoos' Nest" set, and the new "Casablanca" 2 disc set. Right now, my copy of Amadeus has been misplaced, and I dunno where its at, so I might have to buy a new copy of it anyway, in which case I would probably get the 2 disc set... but I am not sure that I want to re-purchase this movie anyway...

see that is what i mean it just gets to be too many. i think there should only be at the most 2 editions of a dvd, and maybe a another release after it has been out a few years to make it more widely available if there is a high demand for that film.

I agree...I'd like to get my hands on the criterion edition of Robocop, but I sure as hell aint going to pay 35 for it on ebay!
P.S. To Warner Bros,
I will gladly shell out 28 bucks for a new and improved Batman. Give me DTS and anamorphic widescreen on the first disk and a second disk full of features and I'll be happy :D Thank you!

another release of batman would make since there has only been one release of the film and it has been a few years, so people who now want to buy the film find it harder to find. there are rumors of another batman film coming out so they may be waiting to do another edition for when that movie comes out. that is what they are doing with the first three star wars film. they aren't releasing them until 2005 when the final film comes out.
