Well provided that they poll the pulic for many of them, they are accurate for their veiwers.

Most of the ones I've seen are made up by VH1 people and people in the industry and it seems like Britney Spears is asked to give her picks for each one....

welll, for the big ones(Artists, Albums, Songs, Women, and even the Best Bands of Hard Rock) they did poll industry people and artists.
For the icon's list, I think it was a colaboration with People magazine or something like that.
I voted for 50-75 %.
Most of the lists are pretty good, although I certainly disagree with them. I mean where are Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits, Tupac Shakur? Many other very great artists I could name. The song list doesn't bother me so much, because really, who wants to look at a list that is half-made up of Bob Dylan songs? So let them pick the most popular, whatever. Albums, I had a few gripes with too, but if you just forget about the order they put the albums and artists in, and just put in alphabetical, its not so bad...

they are so inaccurate, i mean who votes for these things?

They are 100% accurate for the people who voted.

The lists were compiled by the public therefore the lists are 100% accurate because the people have voiced their opinions and that's that

Then Vh1 must have the dumbest most unintelligent viewers ever. i voted on a couple of the lists and what the list turned out to be was DEFINTELY not what i voted for. it has alot more to do with then just votes. these are the worst lists i have ever seen; with the exception of the hard rock bands list. thats the only list that didnt piss me off.

And Oprah is DEFINTELY not the #1 pop culture icon, i dont give a ***** what VH1 says. She may be an icon for WOMEN, but nowhere near an icon for MEN. so she CANT be the #1 icon. Elvis is #1 in my book.

personally I don't give a ***** about icons. But just to clarify, VH1's music lists are not voted on by VH1's viewers, nor are they voted on by nearly anyone who works at VH1. they are voted on by musicians and industry insiders...
Is Oprah a greater Icon than Elvis? I dunno. Who cares?

I know! Why isn't Elvis ever recognized or praised for any of his accomplishments?

Elvis was at the right place at the right time, he himself didn't do much to create his music nor to promote it. He sang pretty good, he looked good, and he had a sexy dance. But it wasn't better than real rock n roll, and he was merely a product of Sun records. He was just lucky to be the guy who did it...his success didn't have much to do with his own abilities...

it is common knowledge that Elvis didnt write any of his own songs. and his success and EVERYTHING to do with his own abilities. the guy could sing gospel to country to pop to rock. he is an icon that many people look up to and i cant think of a bigger death in music history then when he died. i had never seen so many people show up and mourn for a guy they didnt even know. what does that tell you?

Elvis was a good singer, but he wasn't a great singer. His death was a big deal to people who haven't been introduced to great music. His death is probably the best thing that could have happened to his legacy. He had absolutely nothing left to offer the music world, and had he lived, he would have been a huge joke. John Lennon, on the other hand, did have plenty to offer, and his death was deffintitely a bigger loss. Heck, the death of Jimi Hendrix was a bigger loss, than the death of elvis. You see Jimi had TALENT and GENIUS. Elvis had a nice voice, good looks, and so neat dance moves...all of those were gone by 1977

Yeah that's ridiculous how she's #1 on the Pop Icons List. I mean my balls are bigger icons than her.

I thought they were spot on with the 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time. But that was because they used mostly musicians to pick the list.
But then again, who should've been consulted?
Who knows more about music than the musicians themselves. The general public tend to have bad memories. If the 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time were made up by the general public, it would've included current groups like No Doubt and Blink 182.
Instead by having musicians pick the list, they were able to pick people that had a direct influence on the music thats being made now. Who else would even know who Carol King and Elvis Costello are, other than musicians?
I'm sorry, but a good portion of the "people" have s*it for music taste. And that's mostly the result of people being easily brain washed by flash and no substance.
The only people that should be voting on stuff like this are those that have actually paid attention over the years.

Thier lists suck. How could you rank Monica Lewinski higher than 2pac?
Optimus Magnus

Dude, its cos Monica shagged El Presidente Clinton
Although, I am somewhat amazed at what's beign said here
I can think of a bigger death than Elvis's in one respect (Hey, Elvis is the King dude, more people visit Graceland than Disneyland)
But the death of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was pretty big; he had a huge concert performed in his honor and all the proceeds went to AIDS research.
But the death of both of them was a great loss to modern music; with the likes of them still around I reckon the music industry wouldn't be the shambles it is today

the loss of Elvis and Freddie Mercury are not huge losses for modern music.
