I've read a lot of great ones...But I would have to say my favorite would be Stephen King's "Last Rung on the Ladder". It's one of the saddest and most haunting things I've ever read in my life.
All of Poe's stories are great. Of his, "Tell-Tale Heart" is probably my fave.

Poe-- Tell Tale Heart, Fall of the House of Usher, Cask of Amontillado "oh the monstrosity!!!" ;)
Vonnegut -- The Cruise of the Jolly Roger moved me to tears, coming from a family with a strong military history.

Ooh...I love Cask of Amontillado...
David Sedaris's The SantaLand Diaries is also great. One of the funniest things I've ever read.
YES, I totally forgot about The Cask of Amontillodo. Great one. Plus you've got The Pit and the Pendelum and The Masque of the Red Death. Great tales...
The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell is a great one too. I think it started the whole man vs man hunting genre.

Stephen King, IMO, has written some of the best short stories out there. Of course, he has written ALOT of them.
The Long Run by Stephen King (Though more a novella in size but it really doesn't matter) is my most favorite of all his shorter works.

Ray Bradbury's were really good. THE LOTTERY was just freaky, THE TELL-TALE HEART was a classic, THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME is something no one needs to experience. I also loved Sidney Sheldon's stuff.

Richard Matheson's.
Like Stephen Kings says, Matheson always leaves you wanting more.
