This thread is to discuss my favorite nihilistic author, Bret Easton Ellis.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three of his movies have been made into movies already:
(In Chronological Order of Release)

Less Than Zero
American Psycho
Rules of Attraction

Two of his novels which still remains untranslated for the big screen:

The Informers
Glamora (Which is said to be in talks to be made into a movie as a sequel to ROA)

Anyone else read his works? Too bad the guy hasn't written for a while now... His last book was Glamorama.

Well, I'll tell ya, being the shallow-ass follow-the-leader type that I am, I read both "American Psycho" and "The Rules Of Attraction". I've been meaning to read "Glamorama" but just haven't got around to it. I was pretty disappointed in "The Rules" (but I liked the movie) but I thought "American Psycho" was a freakin' masterpiece. Seriously. It just shocked and disturbed and turned the stomach and did all the things that great fiction is supposed to do. I recommend the book unreservedly.

"The Rules Of Attraction", however, I found to be very dissatisfying. It just felt like I'd wasted my time when I finished it. I saw "Less Than Zero," the movie, and judging by it don't really think I'd like the book. What's "Glamorama" about anyway?

And in case you're wondering, I read both "The Rules" and "American Psycho" before I saw the movies.

I read American Psycho and it gave me chills and made my stomach turn at the same time. BEE is one sick mother, but he knows how to write a masterpiece, that's for damn sure. Not many people can write something so grisly and make it so real, but he accomplished it.

True dat. Makes you wonder about the man...

Well, Glamorama, like all BEE's other books, have cameos from characters from his other books (including a mention of Patrick Bateman!), and, like AP, contains alot of grisly deaths. The main character is Victor Ward, an actor-model-club owner who seems to be stuck between fantasy and reality.

Having read all BEE's books quite a while back (yes, way before the movies), most of the details grow fuzzy, and I think I'll start rereading his works sometime soon.

The movie Less than Zero is absolutely NOTHING like the book. Except maybe the names of the charectors and the location nothing is the same. As for Glamorama, I think that is about the most misunderstood noval, as is Mulholland Drive is a misunderstood film. Both are genious and require multiple viewings/readings wich is great, because it means it has replay value. I can't wait to see the film version of Glamorama, although I doubt it will do the novel justice, and also can't wait for Bret's next novel.
