theres trailers for freaky friday, haunted house (with eddie murphy?), some movie with robert duvall and haily joel osmand, and some movie with jack black and ben stiller that looks hilarious, its about a guy who invets a way to get rid of dog poo and he calls it "va-POO-rizor"
the movie pirates of the carribean was the best disney movie ive seen since sandlot. the only thing i didnt like about it was that it was almost 3 hours when it should of been an hour and a half. johnny depp is funny in it and is pretty much the only reason to see the movie unless your really into people fighting pirate skeletons.

POTC is 2hr and 13 minutes long. From some reviewer critique it sounds as if it is loud and redundant and uninspiring. Others seem to think this too but say the special effects are professionally executed and therefore recommend it. we'll see.

I'm not sure what the movie with Haily Joel Osmand is but Ben Stiller & Jack Black's movie is called 'Envy'
I'm surprised no Cat in the Hat trailer. I haven't see the Haunted Mansion Trailer is that any good?

Im still wondering what you mean by that.
As for the movie being good and what trailers are attached.... go buy a ticket and watch it. It is more than likely a theatre goer, wether or not some people like it or hate it. It's always different for everybody. But the action and effects are probably worth the visit to the theatre.

got back from seeing it a while back ago. HUGELY disapointing. it wasnt a bad movie by any means. But didn't meet my expectations at all. I've been on the ride at both Disneyland and Disneyworld... Ive been on it like 40 times. Its one of my favorate rides. So of course i was excited for the movie. And I love Johnny Depp. But he was really the only thing that stood out in this movie. If he wasn't in the movie it would of seriously sucked. Some of the action was good, but nothing that made me go WOW! And the Skeleton stuff, which i was really looking forward to, just came off the wrong way to me. I dunno, maybe i just got my expectations up too high. That could be. But I really doubt I will be watching this movie again any time soon.

In my theater, the trailers were:
Bad Boys II
Hidalgo (been waiting to see that one...looks good):applaud:
Freaky Friday
Some Nic Cage flick
And a bunch of pointless commercials.
The movie was good. Depp was fantastic, better than I expected. It was weird, but refreshing to see Bloom in a 'real' role. I'm dying to see how he will pull of Paris in Troy. Rush and Knightley were good in their respective roles.
The special effects with the skeletons were terrific. The fencing scene between Sparrow and Barbossa in and out of the moonlight was flawless.
I'll see it again. And again. I'll see it mostly because of Depp's hilarious portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow.
If you haven't seen it, do it!

I saw it last night and totally forgot about the surprise at the end of the credits. Can I have a spoiler of what it was?
Overall I thought the movie was pretty good, Depp defenitly was the main attraction of this movie, he played the character quite well. Even the audience had a good reaction to it.

Personally, I LOVED this movie. Of course, it could be cause I'm obsessed with pirates and everything to do with pirates :) I loved the last fight scene with Captain Jack Sparrow and that B dude (can't spell his name...or remember it that well ;) ) That was amazing, I thought, how they had them constantly going back and forth between skeleton and human. But I also loved the one liners ("We named the monkey Jack") . Then of course, I have a weird sense of humor... I'm probably the one fan in the entire world of Biodome.... Oh well :) Call me crazy if you want :) Now, I did think it was a bit long.. which makes me mad now, cause since it was sooo long, I didn't stay for the end credits, so I missed the scene at the end of the credits... Oh well.. I'll see it when I buy the DVD. I would recomend this movie to all of us pirate lovers out there, girls who are overly obsessed with Orlando Bloom (my sisters...), and action lovers. Or people who just like monkeys.

I know. My friend was so excited about it, so we stayed for it. She thought it was going to have something to do with Will Turner's past. I think they put that last scene in just in case they wanna do a sequel to it. Are they planning one? About the Haley Joel Osment movie, I posted the answer to that question two hours before.

I am going to see it tonight, and i am really excited about it. I had several friends go see it, and they all said the same things that everyone here said. All of them loved it, the only complaints they were very minor. I need to write a note to myself to tell me to stay after the credits. I forgot to do so after the Matrix and i still haven't seen the revolutions trailer. Lets keep the pirates reviews coming..:-)

Why would you think the surprise at the end of the movie would be the ROTK trailer? ROTK is New Line, PTOC is Disney. The only conection between the two movies is Orlando Bloom and I just don't think he had that Kind of clout.
Oh and just to get it in...the clip at the end wasn't that good. I expected something alot better. I do agree with who ever said it was a way into a sequel, completely thought that when I saw it. Told the employee who was cleaning that when she asked "Why did they put that in there?"

i thought the movie was amazing .. saw it on opening day and am going back today .. the surprise at the end was cool but way too short ... i mean we wait like 10 min to see 10 seconds ..
at the end of reloaded that was worth it ... at the end of harry potter and the chamber of secrets that was cool as well ...
anyway this movie was amazing
great great story
great twists at the end
great characters (the four leads are very well played)
johnny depp is absolutly amazing
keira knightley is stunning so beautiful
the cgi is one of the best ever
the movie is non stop action never boring
the swordfights are really cool
the ship fights are mind blowing
the locations are incredibly well chosen and lovely
the music score is perfect and dynamic
2h pass in 2 seconds
it is very very very funny ... more then u can think it is
i can see no plot holes or faults in this movie
all is great
everyone should see this
i thought terminator 3 was movie of the summer but i was wrong this is way better ... more entertaining ...
i think it will remain best movie this summer .. i see no good enough opponents maybe LXG, bad boys 2, lara croft 2, SWAT but i dont think so

I highly reccommend that everyone watch Pirates of the Caribbean! It's got thrills, comedy, adventure, creepyness, a cool parrot, and plenty of Johnny Depp / Orlando Bloom charm. Don't let the fact that it's Disney push you away; I'm sure they must have bought it off of some independent filmmaker and claimed it as their own.
I would definitely see this movie again! Johnny Depp was great! Listen for quick funny lines he slips in here and there. I caught one and burst out laughing, but no one else in the theater did... it was quick, though. It was during a rather tense scene and I guess everyone else was caught up in it. Twas a well-made, well-cast film!

Well we all look at things our own way. No one can really say who's right or wrong because it's all based on opinion. I thought the movie was great and I hope to see it again because the story was appealing and met my expectations. Others find it not worth watching because it was a huge disappointment. Agreed, I was really impressed with the CGI... the fight scene when the guy was tuning into a skeleton was really smooth. I also want to add my share of Johnny depp praise... He was really good in this film, i loved his witty remarks, they were all very well timed.

Yeah ya know, its all a matter of opinion. I can see why people really enjoyed this movie. I think people that walked in with really low expectations probrably thought this was a pretty damn fine film. But my expectations were pretty high. I am not blaming my unenjoyment of the film wholly on my expectations. I would have found the action a lot funner is there was more of a point to them. The swordfights were pretty damn pointless I thought. Though they were pretty damn cool. There was just no point to them. The Captain Jack vs. Barbosa fight scene was boring to me because none of them could die. And it went on for what, 10 minutes? The fight scene between Jack and Will Turner was cool but that also went on too long. Basically everything in this movie went on too long in my opinion... The first hour really geared things up and the 2nd hour was to me, just pretty boring... So when the last 15 minutes came and things got exciting again and then the movie ends it just left me going "Thats it?"
Special effects were Great. But special effects dont make a movie great. The action scene was devoid of suspense. and You need that. It was just like watching fireworks. The only character I cared about was Depp. I could have cared less if anyone else died.
To me this wasnt the swashbuckling action epic i was expecting. It was just a movie that had great one liners, great special effects, and a terrific performance.
Dont get me wrong the movie wasn't bad... it was good... But should have been amazing. Givin the material its based off of, the writers of shrek, and the director of The Ring. I mean this movie should have just nailed it right out of the park.
This isn't a movie that I am going to watch again anytime soon. I didn't leave the theater thinking anything but "Man, thats it?"
Too each his own.
LOTRfan
07-11-2003, 06:31 PM
I can see why you think some of the fight scenes were pointless... it is very difficult to be full of suspense when the bad guys can't die and at one point the "good-guy-who-likes-to-act-bad" couldn't either. Kinda disappointing. But I think the whole point was to see how the curse could be lifted by Will and the evil pirates then be killed off, all while making sure Will, Keira, and Johnny stay alive. When you think about the whole situation of the story and what the characters were up against, I thought it was pulled off pretty well.
And about seeing the movie again...I actually think it went soo much quicker the second time around. I seriously wanted to keep a list of all the hysterical one-liners. There is soo much stuff you miss the first time. It's like when I watch LOTR...I've already read the books so I know what to expect- yet I'm always on the edge of my seat. Just works that way for me I guess.

I'm not 100% sure on that either but from what I gather: Bootstrap Bill (Will's father) was a good pirate that died senselessy as a result of his comrades greed. So when the "heathen gods" cursed the pirates for the treasure they pillaged they used Bill's goodness as a way to lift it. For irony's sake.

I have to admit...i wasn't too excited about seeing this movie. My friend draged me along but I was really happily surprised! Its one of my favorite movies this summer (I've seen it 2x) :) The best part of the movie was JOHNNY DEPP! Omg..i totally love the guy now & he's my new favorite actor!..haha.. The way he played his character was awesome & very funny. I agree with Blueman -Jack Sparrow is by far the coolest character of the summer. I always thought that Johnny Depp was kind of stuck up & strange but after watching interviews & specials promoting the movie, I found that he was pretty cool. And as for that infamous extra scene.. don't put yourself through the torture of sitting through the credits just to see that extra scene that lasts 2 SECONDS! It's not worth it!My friend made me do this - very annoying.Overall it was a fabulous movie - EVERYONE GO SEE IT!..hoping for a sequel..:)

Just because some people don't agree with what alot of people think is no reason to swear off trusting reactions in forums. It could just be that the movie rubbed you the wrong way for whatever reason (like you said- your expectations may have been too high). What you should do is start noticing which users agree with the movies you like or don't like. Then look at their reactions because they have similar taste as you.

The highlights of the movie were Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. I loved his films: Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow. Whats Been Eating Gilbert Grape?. And seeing him in such a comedic role, he added all his parts he ever played to make Jack so unique.
Next, Geffory Rush. My god, his roles are just as good as Depp's. He played a FANTASTIC Javert in Les Miserables. Seeing him in the movie, and watching his roles, his so added his Javert to it. He had that tone, and anoyance to his voice. So amazing he is!
Lastly, the way they tied in some of the scenes such as the pirates begging the dog for the keys, and the whores, and the song. Tied in so nicely to the ride. I congragulate them on that.
So, in my opinion, I was blown away by this movie. I may see a couple times in the theater, that I am sure of.

yes, but this why i dont really trust alot of the opinions on these boards. unless i know they are a credible reviewer and actually know what it takes for a movie to be worth seeing. for example, your review is a credible one, you are the type of person that know what it takes for a movie to be good. i can tell based on your posts, that you know what your talking about. alot of the posters here do not know.

perhaps that has to do with the fact that most people won't take the time to write a review of a movie or post about it unless they liked it.

Yes, if you mean the part before the credits where he is touching the wheel. He begins singing: "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates life for me! We smuggle the rich bladadad bladda, drink up ye hardies yo ho!" Thats what he says before the end of the movie.

Another reason why I liked POTC was because Elizabeth wasn't the usual damsel in distress. She was smart and tough, and Kierra Knightly fit the role perfectly.

didnt see your point, but you just like to pick fights with people. all you do is find a thread i create, and post something negative, so f^ck off, go listen to hoobasuck or another one of the other $hitty bands you listen to. i used my own opinion to prove that LXG sucked buddy, i used the critic to prove you wrong on your majority of critics comment. i have reviewed just about every movie that has came out on these boards, with a few positive reviews, do some more researching before you try and insult me. back to pirates.
i decided to cough up the money to see this movie, and it was good. Depp and Rush have the only notable acting performances, but it seemed kind of watered down in the aspect of action. you could definitely tell it was a disney movie. 7/10 i would give it. but yes i would say it has been the best summer blockbuster; but it didnt have much competition. keira knightley was replacable, but she did ok. just about any hollywood female actress could have played that part. it if werent for Depp, this movie would have been a disaster waiting to happen.

In answer to the criticisms:
Let me just say that the strength of Pirates of the Caribbean is in the details.
It is not a gag film; the humor is hidden in situational irony, in Capt. Sparrow's walk and hand gestures and facial expressions.
It is not a true drama; though there are small and large betrayals, resignation and anger, and that shot of the apple falling away from Barbosa's hand. (bussels and bussels of apples, but none to eat; that scene where Sparrow was taking apples from the huge pile on the table, and that look in Barbosa's face when Sparrow offered him the apple that he couldn't taste, god)
It is not a sterotypical overblown teen romance; and Bloom and Knightly presented a quiet performance, counterpoint Depp's. From the first scene, the actors wove a wall of class and social standing and misunderstanding (Elizabeth love of pirates next to Will's initial vehement hatred towards the same). The strain between them gets overshadowed with Capt. Sparrow's sheer exhuberence, if you aren't paying attention.
And the whole point of the last fight scene was to get Will near the chest. Sparrow had to keep Barbosa occupied; and Barbosa is *not* incompetent, in an earlier scene, he challenged the entire crew to a fight and nobody was willing to take him on. Sparrow seem to be more speed than muscle, especially compared to either Will (who's a blacksmit, and just think about that for a sec) or Barbosa. He *needs* the extra leverage and reach that a sword can give him; and it's not like Barbosa can then just go against Sparrow empty handed. Barbosa may have a longer natural reach (assumed based on relative heights); but Sparrow with a sword would able to cause more damage than Barbosa barehanded. So Barbosa would *have* to counter Sparrow with a sword as well. Hence the swordfight.
Notice it ended when Will and Elizabeth were able to incapacitate the other three pirates long enough for Will to reach the chest before the skeletons reassembled.
And yes, of *course* there were no suspense to the swordfights, when has there *ever* been a pirate swordfight where you could not predict who was going to win, hmm?? Much like in *any* action film you might name, you always know who is going to win. The whole point at this stage is to enjoy the artistry, be they in the form of an explosion or a car chase or a swordfight.
In essence: Shush, keep your eyes open, and enjoy the ride! I think that's the best way to appreciate a movie like this.

I cannot believe the reactions of some of you guys that have seen the movie! Pirates of the Caribbean is the best movie i have seen in years! I saw it a few nights ago and absolutely fell in love with the characters...although some may say I was already in love with Orlando. ;-)
Seriously though I don't like movies just because of the hot guys and stuff like that. The story was good, the special effects were good, and I'm sure you have heard this many times, but Johnny Depp was absolutely amazing! He was definitely the best choice for the role of Jack Sparrow...oh excuse me, CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow! ;-)
I recommend this movie to everyone who sees this message. Trust me, it was definitely worth the two hours!! :-)

I think that it was kinda overrated. My friend came back from it yesterday and he said "thats the best movie I've seen in a year" I strongly dissagree. I think it was a great movie, but I think that X2 and Reloaded surpassed it (barely). But it was a good movie overall.
Another thing i thought that was, well, not overrated but kinda built up too much, SPOILERS

I for one thought Pirates was on of the best movies of the summer. I had high hopes for it. Thinking it would just be "good", but for me, it turns out to be one of the best movies I've ever seen.
The characters played their roles exceptionally well. I never tired of the movie and at the end was wishing it would have been even longer. The story was well done and I only wish I could write something that good someday. Johnny Depp was the most awesome person in this movie :applaud: as many have said. I don't think anyone else could have played that part better than him and if he hadn't been in this movie, it would have fallen flat.
Every character in this movie played their role well. Keira Knightley kicked butt and never bored me. As did Orlando Bloom. The one liners were awesome, and I think, well thought, for I don't think I could ever come up with anything like that and can't wait for the DVD to come out so I can write them all out. :D
I also thought of how well they fit in some of the things from the ride. As I've said before, the movie was put together, extremely well. I also thought as the movie went on, that Captain Sparrow was Will's father, and was kind of disappointed to find out he wasn't. I hope and pray they make a second one, but with how hugely it came out, I only guess there will be. From what I understand Johnny, Orlando, and Keira would love to do another one, and I surely hope they do.
I also want to to say that I loved how emz summed up the movie. It was perfectly said, and I just wanted to say that you did a great job! ;)
Anyways, once again I say this movie was awesome and love it so much that I'm going to see it again on saturday( I saw it on wednesday, when it opened) and I plan on seeing it as many times as the opportunity presents itself. I can't wait for the DVD to come out. I rate this movie a 10/10, and I want to recommend this movie to everyone. Enjoy!

I don't know why you people are alll dissing this movie but i thought it was awesome. :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: i mean how could you not like a movie with OrlandoBloom!!!   He plays his character really well and Johnny Depp is like the funniest pirate ever. I didn't get to stay for the extra so I guess i HAVE to go see it again.;) I mean come on people. This is probably the best movie of the summer. By the way, does anyone know who played the little kids of the Will and (fill in blank here)?

I went to see PotC, and although I still like X2 better, I found myself liking PotC alot after seeing it. At first, I was a skeptic because, after all, it is based on a Disney theme park ride. However, with the talented cast and director behind it, the movie exceeded my expectation. Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow pretty much stolen every scene he was in; Geoffery Rush shows why he's one of the best and most underrated character actor in Hollywood; and Orlando Bloom looks great for his female fans and didn't do a bad job even in midst of other great actors. However, Keira Knightley was a breakthrough actor in this movie. At a tender age of 18, Knightley already demonstrated her range as an actress, from playing a damsel-in-distress, to someone who takes charge and refused to be fixtated inside the mold the society demands her to be in. If they make a sequel I hope she'll be back. In short, PotC is a good movie and I'll be adding it to my DVD library when it's out. 9/10

the movie was way too long. and i agree orlando bloom comes off as a wuss in thus movie IMO, especially since you have to compare him to Sparrow. Will Turner could have been played by any actor, he was a very simple character.
and it did seem like the movie was never going to end. i love swordfights and all but there is such thing as too much, and POTC gets in that catergory. the last 15 minutes was unnecessary.

i only got 4 things to say about POTC and thats 1. Depp kicked ass, 2. Orlando Bloom dropped his blonde hair, 3. That dude from the movie Shine (Rush) played a good villian, and last but not least 4. What about Will was wussy? I mean practicing for 3 hrs. a day with swords is a little pathetic, if not obsessive- but wussy?! He was the only one bold enough to "fraternize" with pirates in order to accomplish his mission-saving Elizabeth. He was willing to die for her and he gave Jack- a seasoned pirate and captain- a run for his money in sword fighting. I agree that Jack was an impressive character (largely due to Johnny's intrepretation) but when you think about it - Will and Jack were equally complex. Will had to own up to his pirate heritage while keeping his values and Jack- well, he could've been good, could've been bad...it was never clear cut. He could have stabbed everyone in the back but ended up being just as loyal as Will and got what he wanted to boot- his ship. I feel we were meant to be focused on Jack Sparrow and have Will and Elizabeth kinda on the sidelines. Considering that, I think Orlando and Keira overall played their characters well.

i ment orladno bloom is a wuss as the character will turner. Will Turner is the quintessesntial hero thats in every movie. there are a number of actors i can think of that could've played Will Turner, i just dont think Orlando Bloom presents the "toughness" needed to be a hero, especially a pirate hero. I just kept seeing Legolas on a boat. Jack Sparrow is the anti-hero, and Depp played him perfectly. of course, IMO.
how about POTC only getting a 28% drop on its second weekend at the box office? it came close to Bad Boys 2 at the top spot, in its opening weekend!!! i think POTC did 33 million, with Bad Boys 2 just doing 46.5 mil in its opening weekend. i knew Bad Boys 2 wouldnt do more then 50 mil. i think POTC might regain the top spot next weekend, i dont think Tomb Raider is going to have a big draw, considering the first one was really bad.

I doubt Pirates will top next week. I think it will have a strong showing (at least 20 mil.) but Seabiscuit is also coming out and that seems to be a critic favorite. All depends on how many theaters show it of course. But overall POTC will probably stay in the top 3.

Hands down the best Moive to come out this year. Depp is pefect in his role, and he doesn't miss and beat ("Stop blowing holes in my ship!" lol). Knightly was great as well. Not you typical damsel in distress. She will certainly be a force to be reconded with. I thought Bloom was fine as Turner, though granted it could have been played by any numer of actors, but I didn't he was bad it. In fact it reminded me a bit of Guybrush Threepwood from monkey island heh.
Not much else I can sya but I loved every minute of it.

Of course not. Remember when Will was being held on to and Sparrow was talking to Barbosa about what was waiting for them outside? Well, just then, Sparrow knew he was going to fight him but he couldn't beat an immortal so he stole a piece of gold therefore making him cursed as well.

Not bad, not bad at all.
The biggest highlight: Sparrow stepping off his ship's sail, literally, and Depp's performance, wow.
The only problems: Not enough swordplay. There was the Sparrow/Turner and Barbossa spars, but nothing extraordinary. Speaking of extraordinary, the critics complained that were too many explosions in LXG, but this one is just as guilty, cannon fire, cannon fire, explosion, someone jumping from explosion, ships sinks, explosion, someone jumping from explosion, ahh....
And there was not a really big grand sense of adventure, its mainly village on the coast, then that rocky island, another village location, then back to that rocky island. I was expecting high seas fun and more storm scenes, like the one it did featured.
But generally, it was lighthearted and fun to watch...:p

*saw potc again earlier tonight and me and my friends were the only ones in the theater for the extra part, seems that not many people know about it, hehe*
the thing that i can't seem to figure out is how the hell will the storyline for the second one go. hmmm....

bootstrap bill is still alive. he was immortally cursed when he sunk to the bottom of the ocean, maybe he escaped. it would be all to predictable. i hope they do something more original.
