BUFFALLO SOLDIERS 8/10- Hilarious balck comedy about what a well oiled miliatry machine does when there is no enemy. Joaquin Phoneix and Scott Glen are their usual brilliant selves creating memorable charecters that they obvuiously enjoyed brining to life. The casting of Ed Harris as a weak military brass is inspired casting and very difficult to watch at times. a Kickin soundtrack and inventive cinematography make the film all teh more enjoyable.

FINDING NEMO- 8/10- Not Pixar's best but still bloody funny stuff, and definetly raises the bar on CG animation. As an aussie found the humour worked and the scenes of Sydney harbour were breathtaking.

WAY DOWN TOWN- 8/10 Highly original comedy that feeds the mind and constantly amuses. A Very clever idea is brought to life and raises interesting questions about the modern urban ideal and the 9-5 rat race. Definetly the best film out of Canada since THE CUBE and a must see for fans of stimulating comedy

CITY OF GOD 9/10- Oh my god this is one hard film and brilliant. Paints a very vivid portrait of the Rio De Janiro''s slum underbelly, is beautifully shot with inspired camera choices. The script is raw and works perfectly to evoke realism at every turn. The narrative structure is wonderful much like Amores Perros and the acting all round is completly believable. Believe the critics, This film is must see entertainment that will stay with you forever.

"Jimmy Dean" Im so jealous, Ive been dying to see the TAO OF STEVE for eons but alas its unavailable in Oz. Im a massive McQueen fan and can imagine being highly entertained by it.

In tribute to the late, great Charlie Bronson I had a little marathon salute to the legend last nite.

MAGNIFICENT 7- 9/10
DIRTY DOZEN- 8/10
THE MECHANIC- 8.5/10 (My personal fave Bronson film)
DEATH HUNT- 8/10

I also watched LOVELY & AMAZING 8/10 which is a fantastic snapshot of 3 womens lives and how there own negative self image manifests itself in the world around them and the people they know. Funny, insightful and pitch black laughs.

All the charecters are realistically written and have faults and problems that serve to create multi dimensional charecters you can laugh at. Catherine Keener is as usual fantastic and immensely watchable playing the artisticly inclined ex prom queen. Brenda Blyth delivers one of the bravest performances Ive seen in a while as the mother. Definetly must see entertainment for those who like ambiguity and intelligence in there comedy.

I've been wanting to see it for a while, as well, and it was basically what I expected... witty, entertaining, some interesting views on relationships and life and it boosts a pretty good performance from the always likable Donal Logue.

But hey, you've seen City of God, LOL... I'm SOOOOO dying to see that one man, jeez.

Not sure when this is released in the US.................

UNDEAD 7/10

Brand new at the cinemas in Oz is an Australian Zombie flick which aspires to BRAINDEAD, EVIL DEAD and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD territory.

Boasting some Amusing over the top gore visuals, a black comedy script that skips genres and sterotypical charecters all played with C grade actors.

The script is set to roller coaster with a balancing act between gore, thrills and laughs. At the same time what is predominately a zombie film teeters into sci fi territory of the X Files variety. Unfortunately it was all very hit and miss for me.

This one is for low budget horror/comedy diehards. Costing $800,00(AUSTRALIAN) the Spiegel brothers of Brisbane not only wrote, produced and Directed this sure to be underground cult fave. They also did the CGI FX for the film as well.

As a film that obviously serves as a resume as much as entertainment however I think it is not a bad notch on the belt of a writer/director combo destined for bigger budgets.

A guilty pleasure to be sure but one that will at least bring a smile to the face of us gore hounds but also serves to show that you dont need million bucks to make entertaining cinema

I saw the review for it on the movie show and it doesnt look that bad. The effects were awesome for such a small budget.

ambrosia
09-07-2003, 10:18 AM
That's why I gave it a 9/10. Given that it was all virtually done by the directiors and with such a mediocre budget I gave it extra credits.

Suffice to say, I enjoyed it alot more that 28 days which had a budget that dwarfed Undead's.

The very last part where Tom Arnold talks a bunch of **** about rl ppl in the biz was great. It seemed improvised. If the whole movie were like that (or if Jet Li got to do some better planned choreography) then I would have doubled the score.

DMX was irrelevant.
