Besides the fact, and I don't mind, that a rating of 10 out of 10 is more plausible, and has been what everyones doing, but I can understand the need to be different.

But besides that, your post didn't make much senes with your final result of 3.5 out of 5. A sum up: "It was a fantastic, intelligent comedy! 3.5 out of 5!"

well, I also gave The Pianist a 3.5, and to me a 3.5 is a very respectable rating.

My rating system kind of works like this:
5.0-there may be 25 films in the history of filmaking that deserve such a rating, I have seen maybe 7...think Citizen Kane, or Seven Samurai

4.5 Masterpiece, a great, great film. A Triumph of the medium. Think Das Boot

4.0 Classic film. Think Amarcord, or Star Wars

3.5 Excellent film. Think The Pianist, or Oh, Brother Where art thou?

3.0 Good film. Think Terminator or Pirates of the Carribean

2.5 not bad, something in it has some sort of value, think "Armagedon" or something along those lines

2.o not so good-I think I scored Rush Hour 2 a '2.0'

1.5 eh...I think I scored Matrix Reloaded a '1.5'

1.0 yuck, think of one of Master P's movies...

0.5 garbage, think "The Doom Generation"

0.0 totally worthless, think of some of the straight to video trash

also, I find it very hard to give a comedy, horror or action movie any higher than 4 STARS. I only give 4.5 or 5.0s to serious films, more or less...

can I reveiw a movie in which I have only watch about 5/12 of it? I'm watching the great escape, and I do not understand why this movie had to be 3 hours long... I've watched about an hour and 15 minutes of it, but I have work early tommorow, so I'll return it to the library and finish it another time. The movie itself isn't so bad, despite the bad acting and bad dialogue...luckily its just started to heat up, so the next time I check it out from the library I can finish it up in a brisk hour and a half...WHY is this a 3 hour movie?

Last nite watched a few good uns-

CYPHER 8/10 - The latest release from the director of THE CUBE. Nice little mindscrew that delivers some stellar perfromances, great cinematography and an engaging script. The soundtrack too helps move the scenes along. Not quite up to the standard of his first effort this film is still great entertainment. Must see for fans of thrillers that excercise the mind and stimulate the senses.

CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND 8/10- Highly entertaining film that blurs the lines between reality and fiction. Sam Rockwell is absolutely perfect and his perfromance deserves and Oscar. George Cloony is tolerable as the CIA man and evn Drew Barrymore isnt totally out of place here. The films one glaring fault is Julia Roberts who stops the film dead everytime shes onscreen with her attempted femme fatale act that is just laughable.

The cinematography in this is superb and every shot carries a surreal edge and creates a mood. The music is great with a funky OUT OF SIGHT kind of compilation. Well wortha look.

NINE LIVES (6/10) - dont even know why I gave this one a chance. A friend lent me there DVD of it and said it was OK, and thats what it is, just OK. On par with crap like Final Destination (6/10) and Wrong Turn (6/10) this by the numbers haunted house film offers little by way of new ideas and really falls flat. Set in Scotland in a mansion with a pretty cast of UK born actors the soundtrack isnt bad and there are a few nice shots but all in all tis strictly for fans of tacky modern horror. The filsm only saving grace really is the setting and the fact it is made in Scotland so it has a non MTV kinda edge.

So thats one must see, one reccommended.

This is one gritty, tension filled ride that is always stimulating and confronting. Top notch performances by all. Must see for fans of Cop dramas that deliver. (Unlike Training day 6/10)

Hideo Nakata's DARK WATER 8/10 - From the director of RINGU, this one is a chilling tale indeed. Fabulous camera work and score create an eerie atmosphere, the story is intertesting and though it is not as good as its predecessor DARK WATER is must see for fans of Japanese horror.

Brutal, disturbing, gruesome, and, at times, incredibly hard to watch. Despite the violent content, there is a valid point behind it all and the film is never gratuitous or exploitive. ok, I just finished watching "The Great Escape".

Why is it 3 hours long? It didn't need to be. It could have been a breezy adventure/suspense film, but considering that it is 3 hours long, it is not. There are many complaints...bad acting, bad scenes, bad historical accuracy, but the film itself isn't horrible, its just not great.

Wonderrful mockumentary about the canne film festival. Stars Gretta Sach, Ron Silver and Maximillian Schell as an actress, a producer and a director respectively. This film not only shows how deals get made behind the scenes but also how emotionally devoid there world is.

Peter Yates MOTHER, JUGS and SPEED 8/10-
From director Peter Yates (BULLITT, KRULL) comes this fantastic black comedy similar to Scorecese WAKING THE DEAD set in the world of Ambulance driving. Harvey Keitel is SPEED, Raquel Welch is JUGS and Bill Cosby is MOTHER. The film balances comedy with drama very well and keeps you constantly of balance with its pitch black satire and impactual violence. Highly recommended.

IGBY GOES DOWN 8/10- excellent performances and a witty intelligent script are enhanced by a stellar soundtrack and solid direction. Great film that is up there on par with RUSHMORE, TADPOLE & RODGER DODGER.

THE GOOD GIRL 7/10- Jennifer Anniston is the weakest link but put here aside and you have some great peformances here. Jake Galhaal & John C Reily are superb as the 2 men in her life. The script is at times inspired, witty and funny......at other times flat and forced. Still well worth a look this one was a little better than i was excpecting.

John Huston's THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER 9.5/10- watched this one for about the 5th time in two weeks. Its fast becoming one of my all time fave John Huston films (Next to Ashphalt Jungle and Chinatown). Absolutely breahtaking performances from all involved, a faultless brilliant script and truly jaw dropping cinematography. Higher praise there aint, its a near perfect cinematic experience.

Yeah, I liked it ALOT, actually. Zooey Deschanel was great (I love that girl) and it was just a very realistic, emotional and beautiful film. It's a high 8, great flick.

And hey, the year is slighty improving... :p

Last nites screenings were-

LAWN DOGS 8.5/10-starring Sam Rockwell this is one surprising treat. Great performances compliment well written charecters in this black comedy/drama that attacks suburban ideals with intelligence and wit.

LOTR 2 Towers 9/10- (About the 5th time)Quality fantasy at its best and personally I think the sequel outdoes the brilliant original. Cant wait to buy the xtended version in November

GOLGO 13: THE PROFESSIONAL 8/10- never get sick of this kickass anime. High level sex and vilence is complimented perfectly by superb stylized animation and story. Equal to the best live action hitman films like LEON.

That was me, I saw Gigli. It was only for free and anyway, I already saw most of the movies that I wanted to see for the summer. I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. Just as everyone said, it IS a bad movie, it had nothing going for it, it should have not been in theatres or even should have not have been made! But there were some parts that were funny, though it dies down very very very quickly.

As for me, I'm a BIG movie fan, I saw this movie to give it a try, just as I do with any other film; regardless of what the critics or audiences think. I want to make my own decision about this 'Gigli' film. But, I too ended up not liking it.

Its a testiment to how good these movies are, and how well paced they are that 6 hours could fly by like they did.

Both were good movies, but I like the second one bett:

CHICAGO: 9/10..... Bob Fosse's musicals are always about people dealing with problems, his stories are unique, funny, and wonderfully written. I give it a nine because of the DVD. There was no other special features :(

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: 8/10...... I enjoyed it like the first one, Gollums' character is so sympathetic. I love the contrast of the moods between the characters. I give it an 8 because I did not feel it came rather close to the book.... But, I do hope it will for the Special Ed.

The Blues Brothers: 8/10.... The movie is a classic on SNL and it's still a classic when made into a movie. It's funny, crude, and enjoyable. Though, it is considered a musical in some opinions, it can be a little boring in some scenes.

Sidney Lumet's EQUUS 8/10- Richard Burton delivers one of his best performances in this bold, brave and controversial film. Deals with many taboo topics such as beastiality. A film truly ahead of its time.

FAUST 5.0 9/10- Often filmed story based on Goethes story of life/death, good/evil and the nature of temptation to sin. This Spanish version is an inventive and genuinely creepy mind game of a horror film that is honestly on par with F.W Marau's (NOSFERATAU) original classic. Must se for fans of intelligent horror ala JACOBS LADDER.

Terminal Invasion 6/10- Silly d grade sci fi comedy that I only watched cause it stars BRuce Cambell. The script is obviously written with him in mind and his tough guy attitude. Heavily influenced by THE THING & INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS the story has been done much better before.........with that in mind though I did make it through one screening just because the man Bruce makes me laugh.

Heat 9.5/10- God knows how many times Ive seen this and it still packs a hell of a punch.

Catch 22 8.5/10- Arguably the greatest war comedy ever, certainly deserves to be mentioned alongside MASH & DR STRANGELOVE. Smart, inspired and above all funny as hell. Great performnaces, perfect script and breathtaking cinematography.
