I saw Beloved on Friday. It's a pretty strange movie. I expected a sweet littl slavery story with Oprah and Danny Glover, but instead it's a really schitzophrenic movie going from drama to ghosts hurling tables across the room and trying to kill Danny Glover! Anyway, I kinda liked it. I think I'm gonna try giving things a letter grade. I'll give this a B.

Yesterday, I saw His Girl Friday. Great movie so I'll give it an A. I also saw Miracle, which I'd give a B+.

Today, I saw Bull Durham. I'm gonna give it a B+ too.

Boris Karloff plays a Chinese Detective investigating murders tied to a smuggling ring. Karloff's hair was dyed black, he had a mustache and slight make-up around his eyes to make them look Asian, which were only noticable on close-ups. He didn't have a sterotypical, phoney sounding accent either, so it was hard to tell that his character was supposed to be Chinese most of the time. Karloff's talents were wasted in this movie, he should have either played a British character or the producers should have cast an actual Asian actor to play the part.

The Day After Tomorrow

Plot Outline: A climatologist tries to figure out a way to save the world from abrupt global warming. He must get to his young son in New York, which is being taken over by a new ice age.

Well, if you don’t examine all the technical mumbo-jumbo that this film offers, it’ll present itself as a decent disaster film. The water FX were really well done, as were the tornados. The snow could have used some work I thought, but, that’s alright. The acting was pretty weak in my book, but, people didn’t see this movie for the acting, they saw it for the destruction and mayhem. The movie leaves a few things open to interpretation, which was a bad move in my book. Fun popcorn flick.
7/10

Van Helsing

Plot Outline: The notorious monster hunter is sent to Transylvania to stop Count Dracula who is using Dr. Frankenstein's research and a werewolf for some sinister purpose.

Van Helsing was one of the best movies I saw this summer. A lot of people ended up overanalyzing this film, but, I saw it as a B-Movie. It wasn’t meant to be one of your huge “summer blockbusters”, just something for the fans to enjoy. And in my humble opinion, it accomplished that. Hugh Jackman does a great job as Van Helsing, while some of the scenes are very corny, he at least makes them bearable. The monsters came off pretty cool, even though Frankenstein’s monster is a little “childish”. Oh well, can’t win them all. Great film otherwise.

Machssomim / Checkpoint (Documentary) 9/10
Documentary filmmaker Yoav Shamir's depiction of the checkpoints that the Israel Defense Forces man in the Palestinian Authority.
Dozens of checkpoints lie scattered throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip, manned by the Israeli Defence Forces. Thousands of Palestinians pass through them every day, making them one of the major meeting points between both sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Many different encounters occur at these checkpoints each and every day, revealing a reality with its own rules and regulations, a reality that has a destructive impact on both societies.
Filmed over two years, 'Checkpoint' depicts the harsh and banal routine of these crossing points and documents the day-to-day situations that form a microcosm of the situation.

The acting was bad (worst by the actors playing vampires), way too much CGI which looked bad most of the time, the action moved way to fast. Parts of the movie reminded me too much of LXG. I liked the werewolves though. Overall stupid but fun.

JURASSIC PARK - 10/10

Plot Outline: On a remote island, a wealthy entrepreneur secretly creates a theme park featuring living dinosaurs drawn from prehistoric DNA. Before opening the attraction to the public, he invites a top paleontologist, a paleobotanist, a mathematician/theorist, and his two eager grandchildren to experience the park -- and help calm anxious investors. However, their park visit is anything but tranquil as the park's security system breaks down, the prehistoric creatures break out, and the excitement builds to surprising results. Based on Michael Crichton's best-selling novel.

I was at a friend's house and he desperately wanted to watch Super Size Me (2/10 for Captain Obvious Spurlock. Snoooooze.).

Last night watched Children Underground (9/10). What an amazing documentary. It was so powerful. I keep searching the Internet to see if I can find any updates on those kids. Mihaii was such a great kid and I'm really scared to think that the little 12 year old is a prostitute now.
