Just curious how you guys organize your DVDs...
By studio?
By title?
By studio and title?
By genre?
By actor?
By case design?
I keep my discs in DVD changers, so the cases are really used just as a display, and currently not organized in any way whatsoever.
EDIT - bumped to ask the new people what they're doing...

I usually stack them in case order on my dvd stand. I put the standard plastic case ones together, and for the cardboard dvds with the latch opening on the side {like the ghostship case} I try to keep them together. And for the sequels I place them next to their orignals.
For the new dvd's I get monthly I display them on my entertainment center standing upright so everyone who visits will know what new dvd's I got for the month, and when I get new ones after that, I put these in the stand and then display those for a month, etc.... I'm a real dvd weirdo, but oh well.

I'm currently building an 80" x 96" x 25" entertainment center with a DVD cabinet that'll hold around 450 DVDs, but I'm sure once it's finished I'll practice Murphy's law with my DVD organization.

O.K. see if you can follow this. I mainly go by types of cases. I have a DVD Tower so they go from top to bottom, so, from top to bottom:
STANDARD CASES
Best Picture Winners (Newest to Oldest)
A.F.I. Top 100 (1 thru 100)
Best Picture Nominees (Newest to Oldest)
Then, just by wherever I think they fit in the scheme of things (like The Pianist would be above Office Space or The Waterboy)
SNAP CASES
Same order
BOXES ( like Fight Club or Moulin Rouge)
Same order
LARGER BOXES (LOTR: FOTR Special Extended or Complete Seasons of shows)
Same order
but mostly its just by type of case. I just think it looks more organized.

My DVDs are all up in order by coincidence I suppose. The few titles I have seem to be organized by its case design. Cardboard, regular sized keepcase then double keepcases. Then from there, it's studio.

Well, I am quite in shape. I'm 174 lbs. on my 5'8" frame. I can bench 235 lbs. and squat 325 lbs. so watching movies has yet to effect my health, but maybe when I get a little older.

It is the summer and you people are worried about organizing your DVD's? That is something you need to do in the dead of winter when there is absolutely no reason to go outside. I don't even watch that many DVD's during the summer, unless it rains.
Now, with that being said...
I organize mine by genre. Sports, Action, Comedy, Horror, etc, etc, etc. I used to organize mine by lead actors, but I ran into problems figuring out whether to put "The Towering Inferno" with my Steve McQueen movies or my Paul Newman movies. So, now I just put them on my shelf according to genre.

With my VHS collection back in the day when it was HUGE I had it seperated by sections and then ABC order with the occasional small section devoted to a particular actor. Nowdays my VHS are on one big bookcase in ABC order only, goes for my DVD as well.

The majority of my dvd's (the ones in the regular cases) are arranged in alphabetical order in dvd racks and a small bookshelf made for dvd's. I have the bigger box set dvd's on a video rack with my dwindling vhs collection.

Mine are not in their cases, because they put those things in so tight you need a crowbar to get them out, and I know I will snap one in half someday, and I will be pi**ed!
I keep mine in a CD wallet, org. by sets, from most favorite to least favorite. I get the cases that hold 250 CD's.
Juxton
03-27-2004, 03:11 AM
Alphabetical by title, except in the case of sequels. For example: I have all the Romero Dead movies together with the N's for Night. And in the case of Lord of the Rings, I have the theatrical editions together, then the EE's together after them (rather than alternating TE-EE-TE-EE...tee-hee). And in the case of remakes or special editions, I put the originals first. I'm a major geek.
At first I put them in order by genre, but since 99% of my DVDs are either sci-fi or horror, it didn't make much sense. I also originally had my VHS tapes mixed in with the DVDs, but I really hated the way it looked so they have their own shelf.
Hey, I have a rich, full life. Who says I don't?
