A character that is in a relationship with him becomes attached to and recognized as being in that role. It is my personal opinion that both Ginny and Hermione are very good, strong characters in and of themselves, and if they are attached to this label of 'Harry's love interest,' it will in a sense weaken their character and personality given their current (especially in Hermione's case) very important status as characters in their own right, and powerful personalities. Cho is the only popular choice thus far who has been introduced into the story very much attached to the purpose of Harry's love interest, but we all know that unless Rowling decides to suddenly make Cho three-dimensional (which she won't, because Cho was specifically designed for her bland superficiliaty), it's going nowhere. Now comes Luna. From the very moment I was introduced to her character, I called her relationship with Harry. She is the only character thus far who has been introduced that operates on a totally different wavelength from everyone else. She's the only person in the book who is beyond general understanding, which makes her not only different, but in a sense above most people. Harry is the ONLY person who really seems to understand her. She is also the only one who has managed to genuinely bring any sort of depth of emotion out of Harry other than anger. Aside from Voldemort, she's probably the only character in the series who can fully comprehend all levels of his personality as he currently is. There's certain things he just can't tell anyone that she seems to understand. Needless to say, by the time I finished book five, I was certain, and I won't say die until the last page of book seven, I don't think. Also, Luna's character is by nature somewhat submissive. Her power is totally ethereal and emotional, and beneath the surface. These are incredibly good characteristics for balancing out a personality such as Harry's. He is sometimes rigid, very logical, often insensitive. He is also very outwardly strong. Luna is the perfect compliment for these traits. Because of this fact, it would require giving nothing up on her character's part to be with Harry, unlike the other two dynamic character possibilities. I am convinced.

Nicely done Meyvn.... well thought out and stated. I do think Luna will play a role in Harry's overall development, but I don't think it will be in a love interest capacity... I think Luna does share a common ground with Harry, they're both set apart from others, and there is something for him to learn from her, how to be more imaginative. Luna is a Ravenclaw which means she is intelligent...but instead of a more clinical outlook on things, Luna's dreaminess is more creative, all things are possible to her regardless of how unlikely it may seem and I think that is what she will teach Harry, to think beyond. She is very much the polar opposite of Hermione, (a reason they don't get along) and her logical influence on Harry thus far...Luna will balance it out and expand Harry's creativity, and he will need it.

As for a love interest, if Harry lives and if he does in fact have the time to allow himself to feel these types of things again, it will be with an already introduced character... as most of us would agree, it would someone he has a history with already, Hermione and Ron is a lock at this point, Luna is to aloof to be viable just my opinion, a Harry & Luna relationship beyond a simple friendship would require a lot of work given her flightiness it's hard to develop correctly (in a single book, I say that because book 7 should prodominetly tie up loose ends) imo. Plus most importantly I don't think Harry needs nor desires a submissive honestly. That leaves us with one of the most developed characters in the entire series, Ginny..... Look at all she has done and how far she has come in the books, and the fact that she is a strong personality that stands up to Harry even when Ron & Hermione back down, plus she has a connection with Voldemort that only her and Harry can truly understand.... Ginny is an incredibly strong female character, possibly even stronger then Hermione, and imo a perfect match for Harry. She is goodhearted and stands up for Neville, Harry & Hagrid to name a few throughout the books... which reminds me a lot of what Harry and we know about Lily. Another thing we know is that they were an unlikely couple as well, I guess Ginny & Harry draw parallels for me with James & Lily. After all It wouldn't be the first time or the last that a young man was completely oblivious to the good thing standing right in front of him the whole time, I think her being such a prominent character in OotP will begin to make Harry see her as more then Ron's little sister and more as the young woman she has become...plus it's obvious that Ron wants it to happen, so everything is imo green lit for their relationship to begin to change into something more intimate, especially if the Chamber of Secrets again plays a part in HBP. But all this could never develop.... because of the second war and Harry's role in it. But if he does end up having a true honest relationship, beyond just infatuation... Ginny would be my first guess at this point.

I won't say much on the eve of the books release... but what I will tell you because it becomes crystal clear very quickly... Harry does have a love interest in HBP. But we all knew that already J.K. said as much herself. Another thing I'm comfortable revealing is something we pretty much knew going in.... it isn't Cho.

But that's all I'll say...... can't wait to be able to talk about it in the open with all of you. The next couple of days should be fun. Just be warned this book left me wanting book 7 more then any of the others. :D

I don't hate Ginny i've been predicting it for a while, I voted for her on this poll.
I'm happy she came out of old self and became more outgoing and I really like her character.
I thought the kiss was really awsome too, and very shocking of Harry to kiss her in front of everyone. Oh and the "little monster" was awsome. :P

yeah i agree. and before this book, ginny was one of those 'fans' who just gawked in front of him which harry really hates. seeing ginny with another guy and showing no interest in harry surely made him think twice about his feelings towards her. without knowing it, ginny played the 'hard to get' role to a tee.
