Excuse me for being uninformed about the subject, but isnīt Alexanders sword too short for fighting on a horse?
JackBauer
09-03-2004, 10:25 AM
Achilles' sword had the same length. i think thats how it was in history. And since he has long arms that shouldn't be a problem. :D

I didnīt see Troy, but i dont think Achilles was fighting on a horse in that movie.
KayTang999
09-04-2004, 02:30 AM
Achilles didn't fight on a horse, in that movie and in reality if such did occurred. Greek hoplites fought on a ground, they were foot soldiers.
I don't think it mattered how long Alexander' sword was since the man can pretty much fight and win the battle with bare hands, on or off the horse.

I heard somewhere that they were going to deal with the whole thing that Alexander was Bi-sexual? Is this true? If so, am I the only one who does not need or wish to see Colin Farrell kissing a guy? I just don't think the movie would need that....what do you think?

It's probably been mentioned but Jonathan and Colin are both from Dublin. Colin is only a year older than Jonathan but looks about 10 years older. You couldn't find two guys more dissimilar. Although Colin seems the working class punk, in real life it is actually Jonathan who came from the streets. Colin comes from a middle-class background. I've been a big fan of J R-M since Titus. Now I'm going back and seeing his other movies.
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers... agree, he doenst look similar to Colin

WB delays bow of 'Alexander'
Mon Sep 20, 9:17 PM ET
Michael Fleming, Cathy Dunkley, STAFF
Warner Bros. has pushed the opening of its Oliver Stone-directed "Alexander" from Nov. 5 to Nov. 24, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
Move was confirmed by Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. Pictures, which is releasing the film in the U.S. for Intermedia Films.
When Oliver Stone showed up at the San Sebastian Film Festival days ago to unspool his docu "Looking for Fidel," the director told Daily Variety he was working 100 hours a week editing "Alexander." Speculation was that the date switch was partly to give Stone extra time to lock his film, which features several sweeping battle scenes.
Campaign competition
Fellman said the studio had a variety of reasons for the date switch, but insisted Stone would have had the film ready for the original date.
More pressing reasons for the switch, he said, was the fear it would be difficult to gain marketing momentum amidst a blizzard of final campaign ads before the Nov. 2 presidential election.
Another consideration was a desire by WB to put the film and performances by Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins and Val Kilmer, in closer proximity to other Oscar contenders.
"We took a good look at the movie in rough form, and if it's not the best film he's ever directed, it's close," Fellman said. "It has a lot of Academy potential that will be enhanced by the change in timing, and we will also have the ability to focus better on an adult audience. Our advertising and publicity departments would have had to compete against the elections, and you don't want to lose to the presidential candidates."
Fellman said he was confident Stone will stay close to schedule and deliver the film with enough time to properly screen it for critics. That would have been a closer call with the Nov. 5 date.
Dodging Pixar
The film had been expected to go head-to-head with Pixar's "The Incredibles," and Fellman didn't regret avoiding that battle. He noted that while the G-rated film would seem to pose little competition for an R-rated film, Pixar offerings traditionally dominate their opening weekends, with adults taking their kids to the theater.
"Alexander" now will square off against the Fox drama "Flight of the Phoenix," the Revolution comedy "Christmas with the Kranks" and the national rollout for Miramax's "Finding Neverland." Fellman predicted other pieces on the chessboard might move as a result of the date switch for "Alexander," an epic that will clock in at around two hours and 45 minutes and likely will bow on about 2,500 screens.
"Thanksgiving is traditionally a competitive period, but we've given our marketing department a chance to be in the trenches longer and work harder on the picture," Fellman said. "We'll be ready to play in the big game."
The move will affect the overseas openings of "Alexander" in several territories, including Germany and Latin America. Plans to open in those countries in mid-November will be pushed back, since WB has always been guaranteed first crack in the

The trailer was just amazing. I actually liked every second of it. I liked Jolies accent (and she must have an accent, as olympias was a foreigner). Every single part of the trailer gave me chills! I have watched it like 10 times :)
And i liked the final part in the trailer when the screen goes dark and you hear the echoes of "i will always be remembered".... so true!
After seeing this i have faith in Oliver Stone. Though i was disappointed in Troy it was still a good film. And i'm looking forward to getting it on DVD soon.
I think this film will be the best of this year. The costumes look great. Vangelis is known for making good movie music. THough some may say they think Colin Farrel overacted in some parts in the trailer, i disagree. I think what i saw in the trailer was great! Also the look of the film. Everything :)
In the end, all that matters is my opinion (almost a quote from the trailer, hehe)

What does Olympias meen by "in my womb i carried my avenger"? Who did Alexander kill or hurt to make her say that? I cant remember that from history :)
From what i can remember, Philip was killed, and Alexander killed the people who killed him. Olympias also killed Philps latest wife i think, and her child or something like that.
But that comment must reflect on something, i just got curious....
KayTang999
10-03-2004, 05:52 PM
Olympias was not so fond of her husband, some said Alexander was conceived when Philps raped her, so that might be the anger and avengence that she was consumed.
Love the trailer, so powerful! Can't wait to see Colin and Jonathan beat each other up, LOL.

Whats interesting is that Olympias thought (and some legends say that too) that she was the heir of Achilles. And Alexander's favorite reading was the illiad by homer. So basicly he was (in a legend-kinda way) reading about his ancestors :) He always kept a version of Homer under his pillow..
Of cource, no historians believe this. But its a nice touch none the less.

Well, achilles himself is a legend. Though he may existed, there hasnt been any conclusive fact that leads to that. It may be true, it might not.
So, it basicly follows that legend (as far as i know at least).
The cool thing is that the greatest warrior and the greatest conquerer is related (according to legend) :)

I mentioned a long time ago in Troy thread that since Brad didn't get to be Alexander (misunderstood the rumor), at least he got to be Alexander's role model. I thought it was kind of cool.

I like how they focus on the details from history as well. Like his black horse, who he was the only one who could ride (cant remember his/her name).
And Arixstandros determined that Olympias was pregnant, and that the child would have the character of lion - Look at alexanders helmet :)
And I wonder if he will be having reserves in this movie... Alexander was the first military leader in history who kept reserves in a battle. If you also consider the fact that he often was outnumbered 10:1, and still kept reserves! What an achivement!
KayTang999
10-05-2004, 12:49 PM
Olympias believe that Alexander is God' son. This character is interesting and having Angelina Jolie bring this role to life is just perfect.

"Alexander", Like Colin, Remains Uncut
Posted: Tuesday October 5th, 2004 4:05pm (Au-EST)
Author: Garth Franklin
Source: MSNBC
There's something about a bleached-blond uncut Irishman playing Greek and heavily macking on a Englishman playing a Persian whose balls have been cut off that's just, at least on a curiosity level, fascinating. Still, whether the love scenes be as hot and heavy as the two "Bound" chicks or the most awkward smooching on-screen since Richard Gere and Jodie Foster in "Sommersby", the scenes apparently will be left in after all.
Late last week MSNBC reported that one of the reasons for the delay of Oliver Stone's "Alexander" would be to cut out the gay love scenes between history's most famous bisexual - Alexander the Great (Colin Farrell) and his male lover, the Persian eunuch Bagoas (Francisco Bosch).
Now, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Production Jeff Robinov said in a statement e-mailed to The Scoop - "That is completely untrue, Warner Bros. Pictures is proud of "Alexander" and thinks it is an exceptional piece of filmmaking. We've moved the release date, as we said earlier, to position it better for Academy consideration. We also want to allow ourselves more time to complete some of its ambitious visual effects. Any speculation that the Studio is trying to cut scenes from "Alexander" based on their depiction of the sexual relationships of the lead character is false and does not accurately represent the content of the film, which portrays Alexander the Great as heroic, and a man of his time and culture".
Thanks to 'Bithy'.
If anyone can find a pix of Francisco Bosch, please post it. All I can find is a very long shot of him in a ballet.

I don't understand the whole issue with homosexual act/reference controversy that is going on.
First, does it matter what they will show when the movie will get R rated anyway?
Second, public don't care about it, they just don't watch it if it will offend them.
Andrey83
10-08-2004, 02:27 PM
Well, the only problem is that there is a huge amount of people that has homo-fobia, if you know what i meen. They might look at Alexander as a "sissy" when he shows his bi-sexual side. Personally, i dont care. Thats the real history, and that is what they should show....imo.

Well, the only problem is that there is a huge amount of people that has homo-fobia, if you know what i meen. They might look at Alexander as a "sissy" when he shows his bi-sexual side. Personally, i dont care. Thats the real history, and that is what they should show....imo.
That's is what I mean, if you think you won't like it then don't watch it, end of the story.

THE FLASH SITE IS UP and running
and it is AMAZING :)
Wow. Great site. I loved the part where you can click on the character's avatar and after panning across a landscape, have a picture of the character come to the forefront. I can't find who play Glaukos or Pausanius. Not listed in IMDb. Anyone know? Bagaos really looks weird with his pouty, lip-glossed lips. And why are so many characters listed as "companion" of Alexander? Is that some ancient Macedonian term for best bud?

Companion means friend. I don't think that is an ancient term. People still use it today.

My understanding is that companions were the elite soldiers that served alexander as either shock troops or some other vanguard.....and what's distinct about this troop is that they were all composed of pairs of male lovers.

How can he really do that when Alexanders life was mostly all battles from the time he was 21 and left home for good, to conquor the land before him? If he just foucus on his growing up years it's going to be boring, and as well there really is no concret word on his private life while he marched around from battle to battle. Unless he wants to make an issue of his personal sex life :funny: :P

On Dark Horizons:
Some great pieces about the final post-production elements taking place right now for Oliver Stone's "Alexander" have gone up over at Dreamworks Fansite from someone involved in the process. Amongst the new information revealed, the insider says:
"No-one here in the UK has seen a cut of the movie as, until last week, it was still in sound edit here in London - this is the correct reason for the release delay in the States and not some of the half-baked suggestions we've all been reading...
I spent a lot of time at the set, walking around and looking at the amazing amout of detail that went into everything, particulalry in the two huge sets depicting a feast in an Indian palace and the indescribable Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Oliver Stone, along with Robin Lane Fox, worked very hard to get everything just right...
The only test screenings given previously were to Intermedia and Warner Execs in LA (At that point it was a massive 3 hours 45 minutes long). As a result of that, Oliver went away and made some major changes, reducing it to 2 hours 53 minutes and even cutting out a couple of characters completely...
The language is still very old-fashioned and focuses a great deal on mythology, in an attempt to anchor it firmly in that time. Any mistaken references to God (as opposed to "The Gods") were removed. It has tried to be as accurate as possible, almost impossible if you think about it! I can't really say what I think will be the most powerful part of the film as the whole script is fairly intense."
Here's hoping that full 225 minute cut will make it onto DVD.

Apparently the hanging gardens were destroyed 152 years before Alexander captured Babylon. He intended to rebuild and make it the capital of his empire but he died before he could carry out his plans. One can understand why Oliver chose to revise history. On screen, a bunch of rubble on the ground just wouldn't have the same effect.

Wow, rather than snip scenes a la Peter Jackson, Oliver chose to excise characters completely. I did notice a lot of dancers listed in the cast on IMDb. Are they important to the story?

I don't know how anyone could like it. It shouldn't have even been titled Troy, but Achilles. It could have been one of the greatest epic movies if they stayed true to Iliad. This was it's just an excuse to show Brad Pitt naked as more as possible.

All of your statements are correct. But I still didnt hate it, and Achilles vs Hector was one the best fights I have ever seen, if not the best, and the battle were pretty good. The acting was dull, but not too bad, and the script was horrid. But I still liked it, if just for the fight and the battles.
I expect Alexander to better than Troy in all aspects (its Oliver Stone for goodness sakes). Except for maybe that fight, since their are know duels that I knw of in alexander. but I did hear that the battles in Alexander are some the best ever on film.

Well the time period is different so I think the way a person go about fighting is different. I mean Troy was more of one on one thing as you can see between Achilles VS Hector and Menelaus VS Paris. The story of conquering Troy by Agamemnon was overshadow by the story of Paris and Helen ane etc. Whereas Alexander the Great life was about conquering the world, not trying to get his wife back.
Beside, the story is totally different. The only thing that is the same is the fact that they are both historical epic films.
Anglachel_Sword
11-17-2004, 10:47 AM
In one side, Troy was considered Bad because it changes too much the true story (Hector killing Menelao, Briseida killing Agamenom etc etc) . The real story of Troy, writteng in the Iliad, and some other poems is something that itīs part of the history of the world.
Few words, unfaithful movies are, in some way, BAD.
If Alexander do the same, changing the true story, it will consider bad too, and even more, the movie is changing the history XDDDDD

If you want Alexander to be totally true, it would be impossible because there are so many things that still need to be uncover. No one know how he died. There is no solid prove that Alexander was somewhat bisexual. However Oliver wants to do it is up to his interpretation and we kind of have to respect his opinion but if we don't believe it then it is fine. It is one person idea. But Troy was losely based on Iliad and I think they should have 100% based on Iliad.

I agree that Achilles vs Hector was a great fight, but it takes more than that for me to actually like the movie.
I also have hopes in Alexander because of Stone. I'm seeing it on 30th, so we'll see.

I could care less for reviews simply because it's someone else's opinion and not mine. Even if the general consesus is bad, I don't care. I see films that interest me and that I think are gonna be good, not because some film crtic says so.
As it stands, Alexander is looking better and better as the days go by. The HBO making-of was superb and the film clips looks great, too.

I read some really bad reviews on the rotten tomtoe board. Like 5 of them just ripping the movie apart.

I don't expect a lot of people to like this movie at all. I just hope that I will like this movie.

When I heard they were making it, I was stoked. When I heard Oliver Stone was attached, I was even more excited. Then the more news I heard, the more I started to get worried ie Colin Farrell etc. I'll see it, but I'm not expecting much, besides the sword/sandals genre being run into the ground.

I just saw Discovery Channel document on how Colin's became Alexander the Great and it seems like a lot of work. For any other actors I wouldn't be surprise for them to commit to the task but after I saw that document, I am really impress with his arduous commitment.
