The Demon in the Freezer: A True Story by Richard Preston. That is supposed to be a chilling account of all the Arsenic poison cases that went through the mail after 9/11.
The other book I may listen to is The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.
That is about the Chicago 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and serial killer Dr Henry H. Holmes who is thought to have snagged upwards of 27+ victims during the exposition.
The first book makes the world sound like a very scary place. There is still some smallpox viruses frozen and kept in two places in the world that we know of - but if it ever got out, 2/3 of the world's population would be completely FUBARed.
The second book was a really interesting look at the World's Fair - fascinating read if you love history. It's a snapshot in time.
Not really sure what I should listen to next

Wow, that's another one for your GF to read Big Lead.
This woman was a loon - completely N-U-T-Z! It was like a Jerry Springer show that went waaaaaay off the deep end.
She was supposedly responsible for at least 40 deaths, she called in about 4 fires, she harrasssed everyone by phone, faked illnesses and suicide attempts, made bomb threats by phone using a toy voice changer, tried to kill her husband, had an affair with a rent-a-cop, poisoned cats, and just was completely unhinged. Thank goodness she's serving 4 life sentences.
Next I might listen to another mob book - I'll have to see the list again.

That was an interesting book - the guy could have become a made man in 3 years if they hadn't cut the project short - they could have devistated all 5 families of the Mafia - but he took down about 26 top members of the Gambino family and a few others. The narrator of the audiobook was terrific - sounded just like a wise guy.
Next I think I may continue reading the third book of The Dark Tower series until I find another good audiobook to choose.

I'm currently reading Watchmen the graphic novel and the Civil War saga (with all of the related tie in issues).

I finished "Children of the Mind" thus finishing the Ender Quartet by Orson Scott Card. And if I may...
This is the greatest series I have ever read, and probably ever will read. I just don't see how I could enjoy a set of books more than this, it's all downhill from here. The way this guy creates a universe (and more) and twines it altogether is just genius, I challenege anyone to try it. Though individually, and perhaps a bit relative to each other, I would rate it like this:
Ender's Game: ****
Speaker for the Dead: ***
Xenocide: **** (This is when the true brillance starts)
Children of the Mind: ***.5
Next I will be reading "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula K. Le Guin.

If you decide to go past the first one, it turns into something much more. The other three books are really a trilogy. The first book, although wonderful on its own, is more conventional and just a really solid story and storytelling. The other three are philosophical and true science fiction goodness. (Though like I said, it wasn't until the third book, which is pretty long, where this really shines, even though it was the first two books that won a Hugo and Nebula award each.)
I like the guy who wrote them - he's a complete lunatic lol

the last book was quite a cliff hanger - once you get used to the type of world he's writting about here it gets easier to follow - I know a couple of people gave up at the second book but I think it's getting better.
King can get a bit long winded and daunting to follow (as in IT) but I'm following the tangents he runs off into in this one pretty well
IanTheCool
04-16-2009, 12:39 PM
I just don't like his writing style. I'm all for being descriptive, but he is TOO deceptive, and he puts too much emphasis on tiny, stupid things. I made it through the Stand, which had a really solid story to keep me going, but I just couldn't get through Drawing of the Three. It was just too much for me.
Ramplate
04-16-2009, 12:43 PM
yeah I couldn't finish IT - he spent a couple of pages describing the history of a gay bar that had nothing to do with the story - and in Salem's Lot he jumps around a bit too.
My favorite are The Shining, and Carrie - those were really good - I liked The Cell too - interesting setting.
From a Buick 8 was all over the place and accomplished basically nothing
The Gingerbread Girl was entirely predictable and not worth the time

That's a tough one... I enjoyed it, but the style of the book, or rather, styles, made it a bit tough to get into. It takes place during Ender's Game but from Bean's perspective, so it's like nostalgia at some points, but then he's also opening up this whole new Shadow Series on the side. It was tough to enjoy the book in a traditional sense.
I'll probably get to the other books eventually, but I'm not in a rush. It just didn't, couldn't, have that genius spark that Card puts into the other Ender books.

I liked Psycho It is a little different from the movie - but I can see why they rearanged some scenes for shock value on screen. Basically the same story and more of the thoughts in the mind of Norman than the movie. I'd actually like to see someone recreate the book in a new movie - it would add a slightly different tone than the original screenplay.
Now I found a recording of The Detonators by Chad Millman - it is the story of espionage and a terrorist attack on something called Black Tom - a weapon depot near Liberty State Park - July 30th 1916.

Star Trek Movie Tie-In filled in some of the parts in the movie they glossed over to keep the pace of the movie up.
I found some more True Crime stories on my audio club site - I was starting to run out of interesting ones.
Columbine by Dave Cullen is an in depth look at the tragedy, written by a reporter who was on the scene within hours on that day. All of the quotes within it are from documents, video, interviews, and recordings from the people who were there - so far it is very interesting - sounds like one of the shooters would not have done it without the other.
The book is not only good at putting a picture of the perps together, it puts the faces on the staff and student body of the school and community.

I have finished reading "Heaven's Reach" by David Brin. And with that, over the period of about 2 years (with many books in between) I finally complete the wonderful Uplift saga. I suppose I'd rate them individually as such:
Uplift "Trilogy"
- Sundiver: ***
- Startide Rising: **** (One of my favorites ever)
- The Uplift War: ***
Uplift Storm Trilogy - (***.5)
- Brightness Reef: ***.5
- Infinity's Shore: **.5
- Heaven's Reach: ***
I put the word "trilogy" in quotes the first time because they are very seperate books with seperate characters. Whereas the second trilogy is one continuous story. So much so, I had a tough time rating the last two which would never stand on their own very well. Especially the middle book which has no beginning or ending. That is also why I gave the whole trilogy a rating higher than the average of the parts. To give it justice.
If you have not dived into Uplift novels before, I deeply recommend it. They have a wonderful blend of science-fiction, action, adventure and a bit of comedy. You'll cruise right through them in days. Two of them are Hugo Award winners. (Book 2 and 3. Book 4 was nominated)
I will now be starting "The Fountains of Paradise" by Arthur C. Clarke.

Columbine was kind of depressing, but well written.
It really examined the different aspects of the chaos and the crime, and aftermath.
I doubt Klebold would have gone through it without Harris. Harris was a complete psychopath and hid his obsession well by being the classic chameleon. Klebold was a rather transparent self loathing manic depressive, wanting love but not seeing his self worth.
Just tragic all the way around.
Next I am listening to The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective by Kate Summerscale.

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective was a very interesting book - it gave one the feel of how things were in Victorian England, and a great deal of background on how the crime and investigation added to the classic detective story. Full of interesting facts like the word "clue" comes from "Clew" or a ball of yarn - Theseus, of The Minotaur story in Greek Mythology used a ball of yarn to leave a trail in order to find his way back out of the Labrynth.. I thought that was pretty cool trivia.

Almost done with One Second After - realistic apocalyptic take on what would happen if an EMP attack on the US occurred. Scaringly fascinating in showing an America thrown back 200 years with no electricity --- without giving too much away, it realisticly led a small mountain town through the waves of death that would follow from a lack of electricity, health care, food, and ultimately the heart-wrenching decisions everyone would be forced to face for their family, community, and America itself. It raises the questions of how prepared are we if someone had the capability (EMP) to wipe out everything that depended on electricity . . . it seems very vulnerable.

Yeah, he really just jumped into the sexual aspects all of a sudden. It seriously feels like a different book.

well, Roots was slow paced but really a good descriptive treatment of what things must have been like for slaves.
Dark Rivers of the Heart was a very well written examination of things that can go wrong when big brother is a sereal killer lol.
I always enjoy a good Dean Koontz book so i am now going to listen to Darkfall - sounded really creepy from the description.
"Breaking Dawn". I finished the other 3 already.

A couple days ago I finished "The Ghost Brigades" the second book in John Scalzi's "Old Man's War" series. It wasn't as good or original as Old Man's War but none the less I'll read the third installment.
Before that I read "Hocus Pocus" by Kurt Vonnegut which I absolutely loved. Probably my third favorite Vonnegut book now.
Right now I'm reading "American Psycho" by Bret Easton Ellis which so far is absolutely brilliant. I hope the last one hundred pages don't disappoint.

Oops, yes, "A Fire Upon the Deep."
Actually, "A Deepness in the Sky" also won the Hugo for best novel, so I'll get to it at some point. I looked at the back of it at some point. I noticed it was about the Qeng Ho, that's about it.
Are you a fan of these books?

yes im a fan of Vinge i think ive read all his novels ...
A Fire Upon The Deep is supposed to be a quen ho but the connection seems a bit vague to me,A Deepness in the Sky is quen ho(their interstellar traders) but set 100,000+ yrs earlier and i thought it was actually the better book

07-14-2009, 02:48 PM
I've heard that before, that some like it better.
The parts in "A Fire Upon the Deep" that involved the Tines' world were amazing, but I just didn't care much about the other part of the story with the spaceship traveling to the planet with the "godshatter" and people chasing them and whatnot. It felt like I've read that kind of stuff too much before.

Book of the Dead was ok... Had some good stuff but I really don't like some of the writing. I listened to an other abridged book of hers, and thought that one was ok - so I though I'd try this one because it was unabridged, but there wasn't much difference.
Now I am going to listen to Alex & Me by Irene Pepperberg & Julia Gibson
It's about a parrot that this researcher spent 30 years teaching to talk - and how that whole experience was

Next I am on the library waiting list for The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler

The Sign of the Four was really good but with a bogged down ending after Holmes caught the bad guy they had an interview with him to fill in the plot as to what happened with the crime - good up until the end.
While I am waiting to select the third Sherlock Holmes novel, I chose to listen to The Manual of Detection by Jedediah Berry.
