Dione
01-29-2003, 05:20 PM
I like old Canadian classic stuff- The Guess Who, Burton Cummings, Leonard Cohen

I also love the Rankin Family, Roch Voisine, and Loreena McKennitt.

smokiechimp
01-29-2003, 05:30 PM
Cool!! What Kinda music is it? :p

Dione
01-29-2003, 07:25 PM
Well, Burton Cummings was actually the lead singer of the Guess Who. It's very old 60s classic rock. "American Woman", "No Time" that kind of thing.

Leonard Cohen is an acquired taste. He's been around since the 60s, and his lyrics can be sometimes shocking. I love him though.

And Loreena McKennitt plays the harp and sings Celtic music. The Rankins do too, but it very east coast Canadian. And Roch Voisine is just a pretty boy who sings sappy love songs, but hey, every girl needs that sometimes :)

Anyways, I could probably think of much more, but I can't think of everything off the top of my head. I should start a Canadian music thread.

The song that realy got me started was 'Is Anybody Home' I heard it when I was in Canada:applaud:

Dream Warriors
Finger Eleven

The project 51 (alright they are my friend's bad, but I like them so..)

Saw them at SnowJam last summer. They closed out the event and it was fantastic. Only reason why I went. Free tickets too. But it was great hearing them live. Hearing Tweeter live... priceless. The only thing that sucked was they didn't play Come On, even though there was chants for it.

Jeremy Taggart

As far as I know, Jer was born on April 7, 1975.

Jeremy replaced former drummer Jim Newell who left the band in 1991. After Jim decided to leave, the band auditioned over 100 people to find a new drummer, and Jer was the best candidate. Except that he was young, only 17 at the time. The band had to wait for him to finish high school. In fact, OLP ran into problems in bars because Jeremy was underage. Jeremy includes Miles Davis and John Coltrane among his influences.

Naveed is still my favorite OLP album.
Do you want to hear something cool. I used to go to church with Chantel Kreviasuk (Raine's wife). She was dating a guy from my hometown for a few years (before she got famous) and she went to my church with him every sunday. Then she released an album and we never seen her again.

Even though I'm a very proud canadian, our pop music industry is worth ****...
I hate most of the bands that are popular

Our Lady Peace (Pretencious artsy crap... The lead singer's name is not Rain, its michael he changed it)
Nickelback (Could all their songs sound anymore alike?)
I Mother Earth (Crap since the original singer left)
Barenakes ladies (I just think they are boring)
Theory of a Deadman (I like one video, but they are Nickelback clones, I call them theory of a nickelback.)
Finger eleven (They used to be called the rainbow butt monkies, and their music sucks that)
Sum 41 (They are getting old fast. not as bad as the others though, but I could never buy their albums)
Sloan (I hate this band more then all the rest!)
Crash Test Dummies (I stay away)
Sean Desmod (Justin Timberlake wanna be, as bad as it gets, I want to see him fall from a very large building on to a bicycle with no seat!)
Nelly Furtado (The only thing I want to hear from her is her screaming my name out of passion, not her singing. she'a a hottie though :) )
Swollen Members (I don't like them, but a lot do. I think they are a boyband who went hip-hop glam)
Alanis Morisette (Do I have to explain?)
Bif Naked (will someone just tell her she sucks already!)
Not By Choice (I'm not into the whole teen pop-punk thing)
Simple Plan (see above)
Remy Shand (Want to kick his whiney little soulman wannabe ass)
B4-4 (Get my Gun!)
Kazzer (see above)
Kittie (just plain sucks)
one ton (simply the worst band ever!)
Robin Black (Pretencious little *****! Hey robin, you suck!)
Soul Desicion (Canada's 98degrees, and suck even worse!)

Canadian Bands I do like:
The Tragically Hip (Legends of Canadian music)
Gob (A punk band whose best days are behind them but did the best cover of Paint it black ever!)
The New Pornographers (A power pop group that is just fun to listen to. PS female singer is American Neko Case, who is ausome in her own right)
Hot Hot Heat (A new band from out west, check out "Bandages")
Ok Go (another new smaller band, power pop, good sense of humour)
Treble Charger (pop punk band with their best days behind them, but can still rock. Lead singer dicovered Sum 41)
Wild Strawberries (I think they broke up but had a few good tunes)
Holly MacNarland (Great Talent, doesn't rock as hard anymore)
Weeping Tile (No new material since forever, but not 'broken up' kickass band, used to be my favorite)
Moist (Broken up, but early worked rocked)
Big Wreck (kinda Canadian, but first album was better)
By Divine Right (Good music)
Danko Jones (Not many people like him, but a fun musician, and puts on a great show)
Matthew Good (he could be on both lists, one or two good songs as album)
Rascalz (Good canadian hip-hop)
Choclair (see above)
Saukrates (See above)
Sarah Slean (Folky but amazing singer songwriter)
Dayna Manning (See above)
Sam Roberts (he's ok, not great, but catchy songs)
Joydrop (a few good songs)
Limblifter/Age of Electric (I think they are both broken up but first albums were great)
Hawksley Workman (fun music, good sense of humour)

I'm missing a ton of music here, but this is the just of it.

Kris Hodgson
06-18-2003, 03:04 PM
Hawksley Workman is a genius. I love his music.

I know Rain isn't his real name being a die hard fan and all! but i can quite understand why!

How can you call their music pretencious!?! they're not trying to be anything other than a progressive rock band singing about the kinda things that matter to them! (But your Opinion is yours and your entitled to it)

Crash Test Dummies, BNL & Mathew Good Band are my other favorite Canadian bands :)

Kris: WoW I bet your kicking yourself now!!! You could have had your end away with a soon to be famous lady! ;)

Kris Hodgson
06-18-2003, 04:38 PM
I didn't even talk to her. She's a few years older than me (at least). She sang a few times in church, but I never thought she was good enough to release an album. I think alot of it was studio magic.
