My condolences as well. I've known two people that committed suicide - a girl I went to highschool with (the homecoming queen actually) killed herself while away at college the first year. The other was a guy at my highschool that I briefly dated. He had an abusive stepfather, was kind of a troublemaker at school, and I think he just eventually gave up instead of reaching out.
Myself, I know I thought about it when I was an angst-ridden 14 or 15-year old. I felt like my parents didn't understand me, that I didn't like most of the people I called my friends, etc. Looking back, it was just run-of-the-mill teenage hormones and uncertainty. I never actually went further than thinking about it. Same goes for when I was in an unhealthy (not abusive - just not positive and supportive) relationship a few years ago. I had the occasional thought of taking a bunch of muscle relaxers or sleeping pills... but then I realized that the situation wasn't as hopeless as I was making it out to be. I had the power to change things, so I did.
I imagine when people that feel trapped truly believe they have no hope of changing things - suicide begins to feel like the only choice. It's sad when that happens, because the greatest factor for positive things in any person's life is their own self.

The thought has crossed my mind, several times, but I quickly dismissed it. I've been though a lot, and the more I think about it, killing myself isn't gonna do any good, just cause more trouble on the way out.
Also, to bring some lightheartedness here, suicide is like telling God "You can't fire me! I QUIT!"

My aunt killed herself when I was about 10. Gun. Depression runs through my mom's family...and some through my dad's, it was pretty much a given I would be messed up. I was really messed up in middle school, hated school, skipped all the time, didn't have any friends. When I was 12 I tried to kill myself with a bunch of...er, nasal decongestants. After my psychologist literally laughed at me for "not knowing much about medicine" I didn't make the same mistake the second time (not realizing the incredible mistake in trying to kill myself when I was just a stupid kid.). The second time I swallowed a bunch of anti-histamines and had to go to the hospital where they made me eat a tube of charcoal. Mmm-mmm.
I don't think I've ever gotten over my depression, and I don't want to take antidepressants, but I know I would never even consider suicide again. Life is tough, tougher for someone who only sees the awfulness in it, but I'll get through it.

Has anyone here seen that recently released documentary called "The Bridge"? They filmed the Golden Gate Bridge for 1 year and documented people killing themselves by jumping off the bridge. It's really sad. The craziest I think was one guy was talking on the cell phone like no big deal one minute, he hangs up and climbs over the rail and jumps. Really sad.
I think the thought has crossed everyone's mind at least once. I've never thought seriously about it - more like a "what if" scenario. I just believe that tough times are what life is all about and they make us stronger if we hold on. Like resistance training I guess. I don't think I could ever do it, nor would I dwell on it very long. But I do know people who have unfortunately.

Sorry to hear that Olorin.
I've often thought about what it'd be like to die, those last few moments before death, but I've never thought about killing my self. I've been depressed and thought there was nothing left for me but I just keep on going – something always happens to get me out of my depression.

I came close twice. The first time was in high school because I got picked on a lot. I dreaded gym class because I couldn't play sports for crap and they were really mean to me. One day I actually had to decide which was worse -- another brutal session at gym or death. Good thing I chose gym class and sucked it up. After school everything got better.
The second time was during my first marriage. I had married a bi-polar man who stole all my money. I had bill collectors calling the house and sending me letters. I had a new baby which was pretty stressful in and of itself. It's just as well I had her I guess. I chose not to kill myself because I didn't dare leave her in his custody. Fortunately divorce was an option and it was the best thing I ever did. I got out of that bad situation and never looked back. I really haven't thought about suicide since then. :)

I have thought about that many times. My doctor told me I was manic depressive when I was 15. I refused medication because I didn't want to be a zombie (that was just my view when I was that age). It wasn't that I was sad really. It started out that way. Then I got angry. Then I just didn't feel anything. My life felt like a really long dream. My friends, my family, my feelings, boys, none of it felt real. Just empty. Like I was a shell. Then there were the mood changes. Up then down. All the time. I started cutting myself when I was 12 and stopped when I was 17. No one ever saw anything, that wasn't why I did it. I felt so empty all the time. Just wanted to feel something. Sometime during the time that I was 17 I got better. I don't know what happened or why but I started to feel happier and alive. Ever since then I have had my moments but life is to short. I just have to remind myself that my family, friends, and boyfriend care about me and I am usually fine. I still have my "ups and downs" but they are not as bad as before.
But anyway after that long story...I used to think about it pretty seriously. I never attempted. I haven't thought about it in a couple of years.

I take a small dose of Antidepressants but it's because that's part of diabetes treatment. Depression can set in and make one's health go down hill - everything is so interconnected.
I don't feel depressed but it does keep me from crying at sad movies. I don't feel like a zombie either

Like Ewok, I never seriously thought about it, but I always though of "what if I took my life?". I remember the times when it was just me and my mom and we were dead-ass broke with literally no food in the refrigerator, struggling day by day, having no friends around to help and being depressed almost all the time. But you know what, we stayed strong and made it through and now we're both stronger than ever and life is good.
And you know something, to be brutally honest with you all, anybody who is willing to commit suicide before getting any help from anybody is just weak and pathetic. So your girlfriend broke up with you, so what. I've had that before and now I'm with a woman who makes me happy and I complete her. Ya see, fate always finds a way to put things back in good place.

I'm sorry Olorin.
A classmate of mine who was senior when I was junior shot himself in the back seat of his car over that Christmas break. We were all in a work intensive program called IB so it was a small tight knit group. It really affected us. He was a quiet guy and I know he didn't talk to many other people. I was good friends with his best friend too. It really messed him up for a while.
Then my sophomore year of college my brother was diagnosed with OCD and severe aniexty and basically told my mom he wanted to die one night. They started him on medication and he seemed to get better. Then two years ago my Nono (grandfather) died quite suddenly. I remember him asking me if it was ok that he couldn't cry about it. Later he said he couldn't feel anything and he couldn't understand why. So he stopped taking the meds and didn't tell anyone. Then in September of last year he was home alone and had very severe aniexty attack and couldn't get ahold of anyone... so he called 911 because he knew he was going to hurt himself. He's back on the medication but I know he wants to get off them again. I really don't know what I would do if I lost my brother....
I have tried...once...that's all I really care to say at this time.

Hey, for everyone offering their condolences, thanks. One of my best childhood friends (from 5-16 years old) hung himself last year, so this is my second friend suicide in as many years. It's weird, each time it doesn't ever really set in. I obviously haven't been able to visit the tombstone of the more recent friend, but at the the former's (we'll call him Craig)... I didn't feel anything. I just had this feeling like he was free, and that it was for the best. I never understood that.
Personally, I've of course thought about it. Mainly my reasons are just a frustration with life and a lack of accomplishment. I feel, like everyone does, as if I have a terrible amount of potential and I've simply never applied myself as I should. The sensation was sometimes so strong that I used to feel some despair, as if I might never have lived up to my purpose, if there is such a thing.
My main purpose in bringing this up though was simple, look back over the last 20 posts or so (give or take). Everybody struggles with depression, hardship, anxiety, etc. In that respect, we're all very much together and that is what suicides always lose sight of. So yay for life and yay for you guys!

Alright new question. I know there was a question earlier along the lines of if there was one place you could move to where would it be. This question is have you ever thought of moving to a different country, if you have thought of it why would you? What reason would you have for moving? Also, if you have moved out of the country you grew up in and lived in for most of your life, why did you move?

For what it's worth, I've heard a theory that people subconciously botch suicide attempts because deep down, they know life is worth living. That they need to feel like they could take their own life in order to know that they don't need to. That may have been the case with you.

Earlier this year, my son's best friend committed suicide at their school, inside the band hall. This boy was a frequent visitor in our home all the years he was growing up. My son knew he was depressed over a break-up and took him on a weekend trip a few days before it happened. Made the national news (came during a wave of school shootings). Sad stuff.
I never seriously contemplated the notion, even during a period of deep depression during high school. I always would realize that at least once each day, one of my friends, or family members or someone could make me laugh and I figured that even if the rest of my world was f***ed up, at least I had that laugh.
Life's a lot better now, of course.
As for moving, I might consider moving to Canada. Less culture shock.

Yes, after all, pills lack the seriousness that a gun, cliff, or cougar might give. I think the first time I tried, I was about as serious as a 12 year old can be on the subject. The second time was more of a plea.

I've always thought that. I know another guy who attempted in his basement when he was a teen by overdosing, walked upstairs to say goodbye before the pills really set in. His parents flipped out but essentially had plenty of time to get him to a hospital.
I had this suspiscion... he didn't mean to go through with it.

Am I in debt? Not right now, I have about 100 dollars to pay off in a credit card, which I can pay off at any time. I will be in debt really soon once i have to start paying my student loans.
Suicided? I have thought about it, but it was more of a what if kind of thing. I love life too much to do it, and I always know that it will get better no matter what.
If i were to move it would be to New Zealand or Austraila. It would be so different there, I would love it. The scenery there, it looks beautiful. Thats about the only reason i would have to move there, i know i'm not, lol.

8 Mbs is actually pretty fast. I have cable internet and I only have 12 Mbs which isn't that much faster. Cable for a long time here was 6 and 8 Mbs and they just recently changed it. Also, MBS = Megabytes/Second while Mbs is Megabits/second. :)

Yeah, the longer I live here, and it's been in total 13 years on and off, the more I appreciate the real world cities. Or at least cities with more to offer then Toronto. I mean it has everything here that someone can want, but it's missing any sort of culture of it's own. As much as some people here like to think this is a world class city, it's really second class, at best. But we do have the world's largest phallus.

Okay - new question:
What did you (or do you) want to be when you grew/grow up? And (if applicable) what's your job/career now?
There was a point where I wanted to be an astronaut (like 6 or 7) - sadly, seeing the Challenger explode on tv in first grade kinda changed my mind about that.
Then I wanted to be a doctor for a while - thought it'd be exciting - then I realized it takes like 8 years of school and I said no thanks.
Then I wanted to be a children's book writer - and to a point, I still do - but I realized no one pays you to write the book you haven't yet published. So I kinda shifted my focus to writing work that pays - it's how I ended up at my current profession - Advertising Copywriter. Very cool job that I really enjoy.

I want to move to Tokyo and teach English to Japanese students. I still plan on it. Been saving 8 years for this and its what I plan on using my English degree for. I'm taking a class on it this fall and it also provides job placement in Tokyo, but I see myself saving another 3 years before I actually do it.
Right now, I am in sales. It pays very well, but I only consider it a means to an end. Life is at a high point right now so recently I've actually considered staying in America. I have a nice paying job, a nice car, rent a nice house by the beach, love my girlfriend, and have all my cousins and my sister living close by. Plus, video games are at an all time high right now. Worse case scenario, the money I have saved for Japan will become a down payment on a house.

As a young kid, I've always wanted to be Batman. Granted, this no longer LOGICALLY applies [I still wanna be Batman, but it surely isn't logical ;)].Why not? You can be Batman - it's not like the job's already taken and it's not like he has super powers that you don't. You might be a lame and poor Batman, and the batmobile might look more like a Pinto stationwagon with racing stripes instead of the tumbler, but you can still be Batman! :) Nothing's really stopping you. ;)

I wanted to be alot of things while I was growing up. I wanted to be a teacher until I realized I didn't have the patience to listen to stupid questions on a daily basis. I wanted to be a doctor until I found out how much school was involved. I wanted to be a lawyer because I love to argue - but again with the damn school. I wanted to be an actress for the longest time and while I do believe I have the talent for it - the chance of hitting it big is small and I don't like odds like that.
So senior year in high school, it was suggested by a couple of teachers that I should be a counselor because of my empathetic nature, and I took it to heart and will someday soon do something in the healing field.. either counsel as a psychologist or LPC (licensed practicing counselor) or do something less mainstream.

When I was very young I wanted to work with animals because I watched a lot of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. I got over that.
Then I wanted to do something fun like music, theater, movies, makeup - something in the entertainment business - but it is very hard to make a living at that if you can get your foot in the door even.
So in my senior year I thought of bookkeeping - went to college for it - and worked as a bookkeeper for about 16 years. while dabbling in arts, playing games, and collecting comic books - There was a time when I was thinking about getting into radio as well, because I was between jobs ... for a year and a half.
Now I am retired due to health reasons - and I dabble in all the stuff I did on the side...and am about to sell my comics from home.

Just out of curiosity (since you mentioned above that you like to argue and don't have patience) how will you deal with patients when they come in and ask crazy questions about their lives seeking guidance and they become argumentative over your suggestions? Just wondering. :P

That's very cool. I assume you speak Japanese as well?

I wanted to be astronaut from when I was about 6 or 7 until I was 15 I was taking alot of science and math heavy courses and I was thinking about attending the Air Force Academy and trying to be a mission specialist. Then I started getting more into theater and my interests started to shift and ultimately I decided to pursue acting which morphed to directing and filmmaking. Part of me would still love to be an astronuat. It's possibly the hardest profession to get into and I nothing but admiration for those people. Makes me sad that the interest in the space program has waned over the years.
I also was considering going into marine biology my senoir year of highschool. As you can see I'm fascinated by sharks and I tought about being a shark biologist.
When I was in college I decide to keep my options open (I wasn't sure if theater would stick) and started taking some anthropology, archeology and ancient history course (I have always like history). I really got into my anthropoly courses, but unfornately they didn't a major at my school, but they had an interdisplinery track that I considered doing. Had a history minor for a while too....maybe one day go back and go for History major...
But now I working on being an actor/filmmaker and the trials and tribulations it entails.

What did i want to be when i was a kid? I wanted to be everything from a FBI agent to a garbage man. I wanted to be a baseball player before i found out how much politics it took to make the baseball team for the high school. I know i was good enough, I was on a city league team and the coach told me i was ranked the best kid in the two cities that played in the league which held about 150-200 kids. Through high school i wanted to be a journalist/ filmwriter. Took classes for both in college and didnt like the journalist class and really didnt want to do that for the rest of my life. When I took the motion picture production class in college i saw about 15 other kids that knew so much more of what they were doing than i did, and i knew that 1 of them would be lucky to make it. So now i'm taking classes to be a Veterinarian. It's going to be hard, but i've always had a passion for animals, so i hope this works.
What character do i want to be..? I would say Jack Bauer from 24. Hes a badass, he goes out of his way to do something for everyone else. I kind of relate to him a little bit........ except i havent saved the world like 4 times....

Oooh, that's a tough one. I think I'd like to be Viola from Shakespeare in Love, just to have that soul-consuming love plus the beauty of merry olde London, and living during that age (and being of wealth, rather than a pauper).
But I'd also really like to be Dagny Taggart from Atlas Shrugged or Dominique from The Fountainhead. Really confident women who searched for answers even when answers weren't easy to find. Kinda hard to explain to anyone who hasn't read the books, but if you have, I'm sure it's easy to get.

Okay - new question:
What did you (or do you) want to be when you grew/grow up? And (if applicable) what's your job/career now?
THEN: For as long as I can remember, from a very young age, I've wanted to build things. Growing up, I went from Mega Blocks, to Lego Sets, then Kenex, then Model Cars, then more detailed Model Ships, and Planes, then Miniature Figures and Scaled Castles and Tabletop Landscapes... Right through until I dropped out of College, I wanted to become an Architect. I wanted to plan, I wanted to design, I wanted to build. But, like I said... I dropped out. Dreams fade when Money issues take over.
NOW: Well, now I work for a Mortgage Company as a Loan Proccessor. I proccess Loans and file paperwork. I make a decent penny doing it, and the hours are more then acceptable. My boss is not only a friend of the family, but also a pretty decent guy to have as a boss. I have a close friend who works there, and the local is not too far from where I live. It's not my dream, but it pays the bills and keeps a roof over my head. That's more then one can hope for these days.

Being in my first relationship, and choosing it to be with a guy. In a lot of ways it answered every question I've ever had about my identity, but in many other ways it just made me ask more questions about myself. I'd hoped it'd be a straightforward answer, but I supposed live and love are never easy.
I kinda relate to Tolkien in the sense that I still need to delete his number, but can't bring myself to...But it's entirely different, and my heart goes out to Tolkien.

This is kinda broad but establishing contact with people I've let fall to the wayside in my life. All my life, while I lived with my parents, I constantly moved, 2 or 3 years at the most in one area. There were people I made friends with that i loved and I just couldn't keep in touch. In the last year, I've got out on my own, I have a steady job and finally a car. I'm at the point were I've reestablished old ties and am able to hold onto the new ones I've made. It might not seem like much, but it means a lot to me to not have to leave against my will, and actually have friends that will be with me as long as life allows and taking advantage of it as much as I can, if my photos haven't shown, I've been going out as much as possible and trying to capture it all on film. I've developed a love of photography.

Well, let's see. Girlfriend of 10 months breaks up with me (actually we both decided to split), supposed good friend bails out on me on our apartment and I end up having to pay all $2,760 of moving out since we moved out a month before our lease was up. But I always end up winning in the end. I took all of his posters, his 50' TV and his acoustic guitar and sold the tv and guitar on eBay and made quite the profit. I've sold most of the posters and still have a few left. Nobody screws me over and gets away with it. Ah, how I love karma so much.
Other than that, took a trip to Orlando, made a few new friends, made some videos for YouTube, and saving up for the next Eurotrip in summer '09.

It's my mom, dad, one brother, one sister. Both my siblings are away at college now so I'm sure my parents are loving the empty house. Though they still have a dog and my brother's bird.

For me it has to be deciding to wander around from one guy to the other instead of staying put for a relationship that inevitably happened. I was pretty f**king stupid, but as strange as it sounds I gained some experiences (obviously not too good) that fuel for my shorts every now and again

After my father passed away I (along with each of my 2 siblings) received 160 grand from his life insurance. I was 19 years old and a college student. I kinda went nuts with the money and bought a nice 4x4 with a stereo and a bunch of nice clothes and bought lots of round at the bar. Within 3 or 4 years all the money was gone. Wish I had it all over to do again. I would have at least dropped half of it on Microsoft. This was a few years before Win 95 came out... I would have been a millionaire off that alone.
